Suspicion that things here are not as they seem
Reassure me
Oh, why do I feel as if I'm in too deep?
Now, I've been praying
For some way to show them
I'm not what they see
Yes I have done wrong
I swear
Oh, unholy day
If I leave now I might get away
Oh but, this weighs on me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go
I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
If not I'll go
I will go alone
A long way
Oh, from that fool's mistake
and now forever pay
No, run
I will run and I'll be OK
I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go a long way
To bury the past
For I don't want to pay
Oh, how I wish this
To turn back the clock
And do over again
Now, I'm just wondering if you'd come along
hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I'll go alone
I need so
To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close
And now it weighs on me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold
I was just wondering if you'd come along
Tell me you will
The lyrics of Dave Matthews Band's song The Stone are an expression of the singer's anguish as they struggle to reconcile with their past mistakes. The lines "I've this creeping suspicion that things here are not as they seem" and "why do I feel as if I'm in too deep" suggest a feeling of being trapped in a situation where something is wrong but the singer cannot put their finger on it. The lyrics "now, I've been praying for some way to show them I'm not what they see" reveals the singer's desire for redemption, to prove that they are better than what others perceive them to be.
The chorus of the song repeats the lines "I was just wondering if you'd come along, to hold up my head when my head won't hold on." The singer feels alone and overwhelmed by their situation, and seeks support from another person. The lyrics "I need so, to stay in your arms, see you smile, hold you close" emphasize the singer's desire for comfort and love.
The song ends with the lines "I was just wondering if you'd come along, tell me you will." The singer's plea for companionship and assurance is palpable, and the open-ended finish suggests that there is still uncertainty about whether the singer will find the support they need. The Stone is a haunting yet poignant portrayal of the human need for love, redemption, and acceptance.

I've this creeping
I have this unsettling feeling
Suspicion that things here are not as they seem
I doubt that everything is as it appears
Reassure me
Please give me confidence
Oh, why do I feel as if I'm in too deep?
Why do I feel overwhelmed and deeply invested?
Now, I've been praying
I have been fervently hoping
For some way to show them
For a means to demonstrate
I'm not what they see
That I am not the person they perceive me to be
Yes I have done wrong
I have definitely made mistakes
But what I did I thought needed be done
But I believed my actions were justified
I swear
I promise
Oh, unholy day
An unfavorable day
If I leave now I might get away
If I depart now, I might escape
Oh but, this weighs on me
But this burden heavily affects me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go
It is as weighty as a boulder and as sorrowful as I feel
I was just wondering if you'd come along
I was curious if you would accompany me
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
To support and comfort me when I can't do it myself
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
I will reciprocate if that is what you desire
If not I'll go
Otherwise, I will depart
I will go alone
I will journey by myself
A long way
It will be a great distance
Oh, from that fool's mistake
Oh, from that foolish error
and now forever pay
And now suffer the consequences eternally
No, run
No, flee
I will run and I'll be OK
I will run and I will be alright
To bury the past
To leave behind what has already occurred
For I don't want to pay
Because I do not want to face the consequences
Oh, how I wish this
Oh, how I desire this
To turn back the clock
To reverse time
And do over again
And start anew
hold up my head when my head won't hold on
support me during my difficult times
I need so
I desperately require
To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close
To remain close to you, observe your joy, and embrace you warmly
And now it weighs on me
And now it burdens me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold
As weighty as a rock and as chilling as the cold
Tell me you will
Please inform me that you will

What I really lvoe about this song is how thick and suffocating it sounds during the verse, and when it gets to the chorus, it's like you're waking up in a better place. It get's so soft and dreammy.

Dave Matthews is an incredibly talented musician, to play that picking style/ strumming and sing all at the same time is incredibly difficult and he does it no problem with someone else playin a different sound over him. If you ever Heard "When the world ends" he's playing a broken strum pattern and the song is off beat from his singing but it sounds amazing.

My favorite song of all time after Lie in our graves. Just perfect, and LIOG is a step above perfect. Words were never made to describe something this good.

Wow. One their best songs... and this is an amazing version. Never heard before. Thanks for posting it.

this song is about a lot of things. its about his dead sister, about how people perceive him and his band, about black and white, about the struggle, about how he just want to express his feeling in his song to the fans (I was wondering if you would come along and hold up my head, i will do the same for you). about whatever you want it to be. different people with different view. His music is all about wisdoms and love.
