Never a Bottom

And guide myself beyond my bellyache
And worries
Now that you've got me
How can you love me?
Whenever I fall down
Never a bottom
You never want to see them again
All things you fear
You never want to see them again...
I gave you time, more time than I had
In my hands
For you to come down from
Whatever place you'd been
Now that I've got you
How can I love you?
If ever you fall down, I'll fall
With you to the bottom
And there are names, faces, roads
You never want to see them again
Just everything, you know
You never want to see them again
And you know
If this story should end in trouble
Just like it always does
When they tie me to this place
And leave me
I don't know if I'll get up again
I don't know if I'll get up again
The funeral is over and everybody's gone
I waited long, I waited too long
Now you'll forget me
You'll never get me
And every time I fall down
I can't see the bottom without you
The lyrics of "Never a Bottom" by David & The Citizens convey a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability in relationships. The singer is trying to recreate a specific feeling but is unsure if it even exists. He feels anguished, filled with anxieties that he cannot shake off easily. He questions why someone would love him when he falls down, when there seems to be no bottom. He tries to offer time to the person that he loves, hoping that they can come back from wherever they have been. However, he ends up doubting if he can love them if they fall down again. It is a cycle of insecurity that goes on and on, leaving the duo questioning their connection.
The sense of despair in the song is heightened by the repetition of the phrase "never a bottom," which underscores the feeling of exhaustion and helplessness. There is a sense of hopelessness in the lyrics as well, with references to the things that the characters do not want to see again. The singer also expresses a fear of ending up tied to a place and unable to get up again, losing all sense of hope. The song closes with a sense of dread as the singer realizes that the relationship may be over and that he may never again experience the feeling he is searching for.
Overall, "Never a Bottom" is a poignant song that explores the fragility and uncertainty of love. It captures the sense of anxiety that can come with relationships, as well as the deep-seated fears that can make people question their connections.
Line by Line Meaning
I tried to reproduce a feeling never born
I attempted to create a sensation that has never existed before
And guide myself beyond my bellyache
And move past my inner pains and discomforts
And worries
And concerns
Now that you've got me
Now that you have me in your life
How can you love me?
How is it possible for you to care for me?
Whenever I fall down
Every time I experience a setback
Never a bottom
I never hit rock bottom
But there are days, moments, years
However, there are instances in time
You never want to see them again
That you wish to erase from your memory
All things you fear
All the things that terrify you
I gave you time, more time than I had
I provided you with ample time, even more than I had available
In my hands
Within my control
For you to come down from
So that you could recover from
Whatever place you'd been
Wherever you had been residing
Now that I've got you
Now that I have you with me
How can I love you?
How am I able to love you?
If ever you fall down, I'll fall
If you ever stumble, I will fall as well
With you to the bottom
Down to the depths with you
And there are names, faces, roads
There are specific names, faces, and paths
You never want to see them again
That you have no desire to encounter again
Just everything, you know
Simply everything, you understand
If this story should end in trouble
If our journey together runs into difficulty
Just like it always does
As it frequently tends to happen
When they tie me to this place
When they bind me to this location
And leave me
And abandon me
I don't know if I'll get up again
I am unsure if I will be able to recover
The funeral is over and everybody's gone
The funeral proceedings have concluded, and everyone has departed
I waited long, I waited too long
I waited for far too much time
Now you'll forget me
Now you will forget about me
You'll never get me
You will never comprehend me
And every time I fall down
And whenever I stumble
I can't see the bottom without you
I am unable to perceive the lowest point without your support
