Bowie developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity", released in 1969, was his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. In 1977, he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise.
After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had three number-one hits: the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure" (a 1981 collaboration with Queen). He achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s starting with Let's Dance (1983). Between 1988 and 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).
During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, Bowie was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century.

Love Is Lost
David Bowie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The voice of youth, the hour of dread
The darkest hour and your voice is new
Love is lost, lost is love
Your country's new
Your friends are new
Your house and even your eyes are new
But your fear is as old as the world
Say goodbye to the thrills of life
Where love was good, no love was bad
Wave goodbye to the life without pain
Say hello
You're a beautiful girl
Say hello to the lunatic men
Tell them your secrets
They're like the grave
Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?
Love is lost, lost is love
You know so much, it's making you cry
You refuse to talk but you think like mad
You've cut out your soul and the face of thought
Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?
Oh, what have you done?
David Bowie's song "Love Is Lost" is a haunting piece that delves deep into the complexities of love and its loss. The song begins with the introduction of a character who is at a pivotal point in their life, specifically the darkest hour of their twenty-second year. The reference to youth here suggests that this is a time of exploration, growth, and transformation, which can be daunting and filled with a sense of dread. The idea of a dark hour is a metaphorical representation of the struggles that come with stepping into adulthood, which can often feel like an isolating and difficult time in one's life. The line "Love is lost, lost is love" refers to the theme of loss and the uncertainty that comes with it. This idea of loss is a constant throughout the song and is a reflection of the character's journey of self-discovery.
The next few verses highlight the character's newfound experiences in a new country, which are both exciting and scary. Everything from their friends to their gaze has changed, but the constant remains – their fear. This fear is an old and universal feeling that everyone experiences, yet it still feels new and overwhelming. The character's journey is punctuated by the chorus that marks the loss of love and the uncertainty that comes with it. The next verse talks about the change that comes with growing up, waving goodbye to the life without pain and welcoming the beauty of the world. However, the chorus once again draws the listener back to the central theme of the song – the loss of love.

Let's play 'spot the references':
0:10 Thin White Duke from Station to Station
0:12 "Heroes" record on the wall
0:20 Pierrot from Scary Monsters and Super Creeps
0:32 "Bowie" with another Pierrot costume, face projection technique that he's used on other videos including "Little Wonder", "I Can't Read", and a few more I can't remember.
2:14 Bowie's used this concept of holding himself in past projects, the most prominent being the cover of Hours... What I find interesting is that a character from `76 is holding a character from `80. Seems a bit backwards. Also, why doesn't Pierrot have much of a face?
2:55 The main melody of his song "Ashes to Ashes".
It's really good. I wonder if the fact that we keep seeing Bowie's face projected on canvases means something. Like I said, he's done it before, but I feel like it's supposed to represent an idea. His insistence on making references to his past is also really interesting for an artist who is so forward-looking. I know he's done that before but it's really out in full swing with this album.

+aiccu David Bowie
David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known as David Bowie (/ˈboʊ.i/),[1] was an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, arranger, painter, and actor. Bowie was a figure in popular music for over four decades, and was known as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. His androgynous appearance was an iconic element of his image, principally in the 1970s and 1980s.
WIKIPEDIA
A = 1, B = 2, C = 3….. Z = 26
DAVID ROBERT JONES DIES OF LIVER CANCER TODAY = 4 + 9 + 22 + ….. + 1 + 25 = 414
THE TENTH OF JANUARY TWENTY SIXTEEN = 20 + 8 + …. + 5 + 5 + 14 = 414
JONES = 63
SIXTY THREE = 153 = ANDROGYNOUS
Bowie showed an interest in Buddhism that began in 1967. He frequently studied in London under the Tibetan Lama Chime Rinpoche before becoming a solo artist. During a 2001 interview, Bowie claimed that "after a few months of study, he told me, 'You don't want to be Buddhist ... You should follow music.'"[224] Bowie later wrote the song "Silly Boy Blue" in tribute to Rinpoche on his 1967 album David Bowie. Bowie also became a student of the crazy wisdom Tulku Chögyam Trungpa.
LAMA CHIME RINPOCHE = 153
David changed his name to David Bowie in 1966
NINETEEN FOURTY SEVEN = 235 = NINETEEN SIXTY SIX
So his change of name was like a rebirth as he was born in 1947 and given the name David Robert Jones and in 1966 he changed it to David Bowie.
Bowie is one of the creators of modern rock.
BOWIE = 54
FIFTY FOUR = 126 = MODERN ROCK
If we look deeper into the name Bowie we find the following.
First we use the Normal Values
A = 1, B = 2…J = 10, K = 20…. S = 100, T = 200…Z = 800
BOWIE = 2 + 60 + 500 + 9 + 5 = 576 (NV)
Next we use the Large Values. Here A = 1 and ONE = 34, 34 is the Large Value (LV) of A. B = 2 and TWO = 58 so 58 is the LV of B and so on.
BOWIE = 58 + 65 + 163 + 42 + 42 = 370 (LV)
Now add 370 + 576 = 946 (LNV)
Now we find the LV of Androgynous.
ANDROGYNOUS = 34 + 104 + 60 + 73 + 65 + 65 + 149 + 104 + 65 + 141 + 86 = 946 (LV)
So when David changed his surname to Bowie he took on a different persona having now a dual sexual character.
We now examine two other codes of Bowie. First the Placement Value (A = 1, B = 2….. Z = 26)
BOWIE = 54 (PV)
Next the Normal Inner Values. To get these we use the Normal Values, for example, W = 500 and then work out FIVE HUNDRED = 116 (PV) or O = 60 and SIXTY = 97 (PV). 116 is the NIV of W and 97 is the NIV of O.
This gives
BOWIE = 58 + 97 + 116 + 42 + 42 = 355 (NIV)
Now we add these two values:
54 + 355 = 409 (PNIV)
David died of cancer.
CANCER = 44 (PV) = 365 (LV)
44 + 365 = 409 (WV) (Whole Value = LV + PV)
It was Liver Cancer
LIVER = 409 (LV)
So we see that by changing his name to Bowie it not only affected his character but also what disease he was susceptible to and which organ that disease would affect.
