Full Steam
David Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All our lives we've dreamed about it
Just to find that it was never real
This sure ain't no great Valhalla
Coming closer each turn of the wheel
Forlorn adrift on seas of beige
In this our Golden Age
Bullied suckered pimped and patronized
Every day your tawdry little lives
So loose your head
And step within
The silence deafening
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming but still
Running full steam ahead
In and out of consciousness
It breaks my heart to see you like this
Crying wringing hands and cursing fate
Always so little far too late
It's 3am I'm wide awake
There's still one call to make
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Running full steam ahead
Running full steam ahead
Running full steam
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming and I
Running full steam
Now you
And I
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it

We all saw it coming
But we Still bought it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to David Gray's "11 Full Steam" express a sense of disappointment and disillusionment with the world. The opening lines describe a lifelong dream that was never realized, followed by the realization that there is no great Valhalla or utopian society awaiting us. The line "Forlorn adrift on seas of beige / In this our Golden Age" speaks to the sense of being lost and aimless in a world that is supposed to be prosperous and full of opportunity. The next lines criticize the everyday grind and the way people are taken advantage of and made to feel small.

The chorus shifts to a sense of resignation and acceptance that we all saw this disappointment coming but continued to buy into it and live our lives as if everything would turn out okay. The final verses express a sense of sadness and heartbreak at seeing others suffer, but the line "Always so little far too late" implies that it may be too late to reverse the damage that has been done. In the end, the singer is still running full steam ahead, suggesting that even when we know that things are not as we hoped, we still continue to move forward.

I love performers who sing with passion and conviction, and no one does that better than Annie Lennox and David Grey!

@francescorengifo

Oh ANNIE. I am freaking balling to this song I think I have played it 6 times already and I have shared it with like 6 people on facebook. Its got me shaking like a leaf or a rattled bone. Wondering about peple who are going hungry and war all over. You got me wide awake. Yesterday I was having a rough day and I was thinking, there has to be some light to all my fighting against darkness. And I woke up to the gift of this. Thank you soooo much. sooo much!

@Music4allofU

I've been a David Gray fan since I first heard his track "Babylon" over 10 years ago. I adore Annie Lennox.

@bugpal

Hey there music, hope you’re doing well after two years. I absolutely fell in love with David’s “White Ladder” album. I had no idea he had done a duet with Annie L until this randomly came on My ol’ iPod and I recognized her voice.
