Anything Goes
De-Lovely Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the only sound on the empty street
is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
that belong to a lonesome cop
I open shop

The moon so long has been gazing down
on the warward ways of this wayward town
my smile becomes a smirk, I go to work

Love for sale
appetizing young love for sale
love thats fresh and still unspoiled
love thats only slightly soiled
love for sale

who will buy
who would like to sample my supply
who's prepared to pay the price
for a trip to paradise
love for sale

let the poets pipe of love
in their childish ways
I know every type of love
better far than they
if you want the thrill of love
I have been through the mill of love
old love
new love
every love but true love

love for sale
appetizing young love for sale

if you want to buy my wares follow me and clime the stairs
love for sale

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of De-Lovely's song "Anything Goes" can be interpreted as a manifestation of someone who is offering love for sale. It talks about a scenario where the only sound on an empty street is the heavy tread of the heavy feet that belong to a lonesome cop, and during this quietness, the shop of love opens up. The moon has been gazing down on the wayward ways of this wayward town for so long that the person's smile becomes a smirk as they go to work. The work here refers to selling love, but not just any love. The love that is appetizing and still fresh and unspoiled yet slightly soiled is available for purchase. The person asks who would like to sample their supply of love and who is prepared to pay the price for the journey to paradise.

The lyrics continue to claim that even though the poets pipe of love in their childish ways, the person offering love for sale knows every type of love better than they do. The person offers every love but true love, meaning that they know them all, the old love, new love, and every other form but not true love. The chorus repeats itself, as the person is still offering to sell love. If anyone wants to buy their wares, they ask to follow them and climb the stairs. The lyrics of this song represent a sharp contrast to the traditional love songs that talk about pure love and emotions. This song is about the commercialization of love in a society that values material wealth and fulfillment over lasting emotional attachment.

The night is young, the skies are clear
And if you wanna go walking, dear
It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-lovely
I understand the reason why
You're sentimental, 'cause so am I
It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-lovely
You can tell at a glance
What a swell night this is for romance
You can hear dear Mother Nature murmuring low
"Let yourself go"

So please be sweet, my chickadee
And when I kiss you, just say to me
"It's delightful, it's delicious
It's delectable, it's delirious
It's dilemma, it's delimit, it's deluxe
It's de-lovely"

[HOPE]
I feel a sudden urge to sing
The kind of ditty that invokes the spring
So control your desire to curse
While I crucify the verse

[BILLY]
This verse you've started seems to me
The tinpantithesis of melody
So spare me, please, the pain
Just skip the damn thing and sing the refrain
[HOPE]
Mi, mi, mi, mi
Re, re, re, re
Do, sol, mi, do, la, si

The night is young, the skies are clear
And if you want to go walking, dear
It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-lovely
I understand the reason why
You're sentimental, 'cause so am I
It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-lovely
You can tell at a glance
What a swell night this is for romance
You can hear dear Mother Nature murmuring low

[BOTH]
"Let yourself go"

So please be sweet, my chickadee
And when I kiss you, just say to me

[HOPE]
It's divine, dear

[BILLY]
It's de-vene, dear
[HOPE]
It's de-wunderbar

[BILLY]
It's de-victory

It's de-velop
It's de-vinner
It's de-voix
It's de-lovely

fordsproduction

For those who've seen/performed the show, did anyone else find it ironic that Billy sings "the skies are clear" even though the scene is supposed to take place in the rain?

Mary Louise Callaghan

haha oh my god Hope literally says "and now it's raining" I never realized that...

AJ Fulco

+fordsproduction i thought when she says,"it's raining," she was talking about herself crying. idk, thats how I always interoperated the line.

Traestaree

It's probably that when everything's going wrong it's raining but when this song happens everything's right so it clears up as a metaphor that this was meant to be

Risa Kamiragi

It’s suposed to show how when someone’s in love, even if it’s raining (which is considered to be a sad thing) you get blinded by love
