Love For Sale
De-Lovely Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the only sound in the empty street
Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
That belong to a lonesome cop
I open shop

When the moon so long has been gazing down
On the wayward ways of this wayward town
That her smile becomes a smirk
I go to work

Love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled
Love that's only slightly soiled
Love for sale

Who will buy?
Who would like to sample my supply?
Who's prepared to pay the price
For a trip to paradise?
Love for sale

Let the poets pipe of love
In their childish way
I know every type of love
Better far than they

If you want the thrill of love
I've been through the mill of love
Old love, new love
Every love but true love

Love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale
If you want to buy my wares
Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale

Love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale
If you want to buy my wares

Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale

Overall Meaning

The song "Love For Sale" by De-Lovely, is a provocative and tantalizing piece that presents the idea of love as a commodity that can be bought and sold. The first stanza sets the scene of a lonely night in the city, where the steady footsteps of a police officer are the only sounds to be heard. The singer, as a seller of love, sees this as the perfect time to open shop, implying that the emptiness of the night creates an opportunity for transactions to take place.

The second stanza continues with the theme of selling love, with the moon representing the cynicism and jadedness of society towards romance. The singer sees this as the perfect time to "go to work", indicating that love is a business for them. The chorus is where the provocative message comes in, with the singer advertising their "appetizing young love" that is "only slightly soiled". They question who will buy their love and who is willing to pay the price for a "trip to paradise".

The third stanza is a direct challenge to the romantic poets who are seen as naively describing love. The singer instead claims to know every type of love, including the thrill of love and the pain of love. They suggest that they have experienced every kind of love except true love, further emphasizing that this is a business transaction. The final chorus repeats the message of love being for sale and invites those who want to buy to follow them and climb the stairs.

Overall, "Love For Sale" is a controversial and thought-provoking piece that challenges traditional ideas of love as a pure and unquantifiable emotion. Instead, it presents the idea of love as a commodity that can be bought and sold, with the singer positioning themselves as a seller of this love.

One of my absolute favorite renditions of this song. Vivian's voice is sultry and crisp. So beautiful.

@PatriciaSims2426

What makes this soooo genius is that it's one continuous shot. It's brilliant actually. Vivian kills this. Great post!

@lvettesonai3208

One of my favorite scenes from the movie.

@vernonhill7681

+Patricia Sims Brilliant yes, but not continuous, at least not in the usual sense. The fact that Kline has multiple costume changes shows that. Still, an extremely well done scene.

@freeradt

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE jazz....however, I never use to like this song, I don't know why, just didn't care for it, be it the lyrics, or its delivery....UNTIL I heard this woman sing it.......THAT WAS THE END OF THAT!!! SHE NAILS EVERY NOTE WITH VELVET LAYERS OF VANILLA, CHOCOLATE & EVERY OTHER UNIMAGINABLE FLAVOR OF VOCALS. WHO IS THIS WOMAN?!?!? AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE NOT HEARD HER BEFORE THIS MOVIE? I know I live under a rock sometimes, I hibernate in my basement studio writing and recording like any other otter songwriter, but seriously, I'd have noticed her!!! What a beautiful voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VIVIAN....?

Love this movie

@cawiseguy

I didn't even notice that Vivian Green and Kevin Kline had changed their clothes..to indicate that Cole Porter was a 'regular'.  I used to think of that song very literally; I detect subtle layers of meaning in that song.  Love.  For Sale.   That's heavy, IMHO.

@DianeBvideos

Fantastic! Heard this in the movie and wanted to hear again. Amazing what at least some singers used to other styles (and even young) can do with styles and ballads so different from what they're used to singing.
