Deep Purple have had several line-up changes and were broken up for eight years from 1976 to 1984, with drummer Ian Paice being the band's only constant member. The first four line-ups, which constituted the band's original 1968–1976 run, are officially indicated as Mark I (1968–1969), Mark II (1969–1973), Mark III (1973–1975) and Mark IV (1975–1976). Mark I comprised the founding members of Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Rod Evans (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards), Paice (drums) and Nick Simper (bass), while Mark II was the most commercially successful line-up, with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover replacing Evans and Simper respectively. Mark III saw David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes replace Gillan and Glover respectively, while Mark IV featured Tommy Bolin replacing Blackmore. The band split in July 1976 and Bolin died from a drug overdose five months later. In 1984, Deep Purple reformed with the Mark II line-up, which remained in place until Joe Lynn Turner replaced Gillan in 1989. Gillan rejoined in 1992, with Blackmore leaving for the second and final time the following year. He was replaced temporarily by Joe Satriani and then permanently by Steve Morse. In 2002 Don Airey replaced Jon Lord, which saw Deep Purple settle into its longest running line-up, unchanged for the next twenty years, until Morse announced his departure from the band in 2022. His place was taken by Simon McBride. Paice, Glover, Gillan, Airey and McBride comprise the current line-up of Deep Purple.
Deep Purple were ranked number 22 on VH1's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock programme] and a poll on radio station Planet Rock ranked them 5th among the "most influential bands ever". The band received the Legend Award at the 2008 World Music Awards. Deep Purple (specifically Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Evans, and Hughes) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

I can't hear what you say
I'd love to stop and talk
You keep fading away
Just the way she said it
Something in her tone
Always so convincing
But she's good on the phone
That could be a while
She always takes her time
Then she turns up in style
Something not right
Didn't recognize the car
Women being what they are
There is no sense of reason
In a reasonable world
Makes any sense at all
To a reasonable girl
She said you know what I mean
But I couldn't understand
Didn't know what she said
I'm a reasonable man
It wasn't meant that way
I was only having fun
She looked me in the eye
But the damage was done
I got the vague impression
She was under my thumb
I looked the other way
And I had to succumb
Girls like that
I want girls like that
Girls like that
I like girls like that
The song "Girls Like That" by Deep Purple captures the feeling of being in a frustrating relationship where communication seems to constantly break down. The first verse sees the singer expressing their desire to talk things out with their partner, but they cannot seem to focus on the conversation. The partner is always just out of reach, either fading away or being convincing on the phone. This creates a sense of distance and makes it difficult for the singer to engage on a deeper level. The second verse continues this theme, with the singer struggling to understand what their partner means even though they claim to be a reasonable person. The partner is also taking their time with the situation, which only adds to the singer's frustration. The chorus, however, reveals the contradiction in the singer's thinking: they want girls like that, even though they are causing them so much headache.
Overall, "Girls Like That" is a commentary on relationships that are marked by a lack of clarity and mutual understanding. The singer seems to be caught in a cycle of wanting to be with someone who is always just out of reach, even though it causes them pain. There is a sense of resignation to this situation, with the singer ultimately wanting to have girls like that despite the challenges they present. It's a relatable sentiment that speaks to the difficulties of navigating romantic relationships.
