Autumn
Demether Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you try to follow her footsteps,
You will find that she doesn't leave a single one...
She's so light,
As the sound of
Her sister Syrinx's flute...

Tapping with the leaves and dancing, she flirts with the wind,
And then her song sounds like piccolo...

Is innocent the rain that's falling on her face,
Washing little sins of summer,
Where water-fairy runs, when summer dance's done,
Where will she hide?

When the nature sings the swan song
And the autumn gives the final cut,

Like a painter, with her sorrow
She fades all colours to gray...

Overall Meaning

On first hearing, the lyrics of Demether's song Autumn might seem to describe a carefree spirit making merry in the fall season. However, a closer reading reveals the melancholy that permeates the verses. The singer describes a mysterious woman who moves so lightly that she leaves no imprint, much like the fleeting beauty of the autumn season itself. The woman's association with her sister Syrinx's flute adds to her air of enchantment and otherworldliness. It is her dance with the wind that creates the music of her piccolo-like song - a song that can barely be heard amidst the rustling of autumn leaves.

The last two lines of the first verse hint at the underlying sadness that pervades the composition. The woman's lightness of being is contrasted with the heavy rain that falls on her face, washing away the summer's little sins. The transition from summer to autumn is palpable here, and with it comes a sense of apprehension and uncertainty. The question of where the "water-fairy" will hide only adds to the sense of foreboding.

This is followed by the metaphor of nature singing a swan song, with autumn settling in and casting a final cut. Here, the woman's melancholy is at its peak as she fades all the colours to grey, suggesting the onset of winter and the end of life. The song, therefore, portrays a human condition familiar to us all - the inevitable passage of time and the toll it takes on our lives.
