Born "Eumir Deodato Almeida" in 1943, he recorded under the stage name "Deodato" in the 1970s and 1980s.
He got his start by playing the accordion at age 12. Shortly thereafter, he started studying piano as well as orchestration, arranging and conducting.
His records can be categorized mainly as pop jazz or crossover jazz. His successes as an original artist (on keyboards) occurred mainly in the 1970s. Since then, he has produced or arranged for acts ranging from Kool & the Gang to Björk; from Eydie Gormet to k.d. lang.
His first album in the USA, Prelude, released in 1972, was of a big band Latin jazz style that immediately attracted a wide audience. His funky cover of Also Sprach Zarathustra (originally by Richard Strauss) won the 1973 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and went No. 2 in the pop charts in the US and No. 7 in the UK. It was also covered extensively by the rock band Phish in their live performances and included in several of their live releases.
His second album, Deodato 2, despite being of the same style and quality, failed to meet sales expectations. Deodato continued recording until the late 1980s on the Warner Bros label, but never reached the level of his early successes -- although two singles, SOS, Fire In The Sky and Are You For Real, were Top 20 Billboard Dance hits in 1985.
Two of his songs, Latin Flute and Super Strut, are featured in the video game: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and on the subsequent soundtrack, titled "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 7 - Radio Espantoso".
Deodato has been in demand as a producer and arranger since the 1960s. In all, he has worked on over 500 albums, fifteen of which have reached platinum. His skills as an arranger were put to use for artists such as Wes Montgomery, fellow Brazilian Astrud Gilberto, and, for 1971's LP "Sinatra & Company", Frank Sinatra. He has also written scores for a number of films.

Thank you so much Les!!!
I love brasilians as much as i love Brits. And hv also heard that they are clueless about Deodato.
Incredible huh???? But pls take into consideration that you Brits hv an extraordinary good ear for
targetting classic music.
Plus i heard that Deodato moved to N.Y. due to all the bizzare political upheavals in Brasil. Which maybe they made sure he did not get played there.
Brasilians are captivating
due to their kind and happy
atitude, but you brits have
ALL THE CHARM.!!!!!
A bolivian fan!!!!

Deodato was always imaginative and had smooth grooves punctuated by brass/synth blast. Jazzy and r&b entertwined.

Yeah he contracted the Sea Wind horns a lot on his projects.

This was one of the songs I used to hear during programming breaks on SEB-TV back in Naples, Italy during the 80s. This is back when I was perfecting my listening technique to figure out who songs were by when the artists wasn't clearly identified. I was about 12 or 13 when I thought I'd figured this one out. ('87 or so). The thing about it is that the TV never played more than the first two minutes of the song; often it was only the first minute. Anyway, I was convinced that this was KOOL & THE GANG because it sounded a lot like the stuff the Gang was doing when they were working with Deodato in the late 70s. Well, I spent the next 20 years looks for the K&TG song with this album with no luck. By chance in 2007, I learned that I was had been ridiculously close...that it was actually DEODATO himself! What threw me off about this is a kid was that up to that point in my life, the only Deodato material I was familiar with was his CTI stuff, and this definitely doesn't sound like his CTI material. I didn't know even he'd made albums after he left CTI.

The bass play on this track is contagious and often gets stuck in my head.
