One Caress
Depeche Mode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I'm down on my knees again
And I pray to the only one
Who has the strength to bear the pain
To forgive all the things that I've done

Oh, girl
Lead me into your darkness
When this world is trying its hardest
To leave me unimpressed
Just one caress
From you and I'm blessed

When you think you've tried every road
Every avenue
Take one more look, what you found old
And in it, you'll find something new

Oh, girl
Lead me into your darkness
When this world is trying its hardest
To leave me unimpressed
Just one caress
From you and I'm blessed

I'm shying from the light
I always loved the night
And now you offer me
Eternal darkness

I have to believe that sin
Can make a better man
Well, it's the mood that I am in
That's left us back where we began

Oh, girl
Lead me into your darkness
When this world is trying its hardest
To leave me unimpressed
Just one caress
From you and I'm blessed

Oh, girl
Lead me into your darkness
When this world is trying its hardest
To leave me unimpressed

Just one caress
From you and I'm blessed

Overall Meaning

The song One Caress by Depeche Mode is a melancholic and introspective track about seeking refuge and salvation from a particular person. The singer confesses to being a sinner in need of absolution and finds solace in the company of a female companion, pleading with her to lead him into her darkness. The track is a commentary on the anxieties and isolation that accompany modern life, and how we search for escape and communion with others.

The opening line of the song, "Well, I'm down on my knees again / And I pray to the only one / Who has the strength to bear the pain / To forgive all the things that I've done" sets up the narrative of the song as a confession. The song takes on a confessional tone, acknowledging past sins and searching for redemption. The lyrics throughout describe a desire to escape from the world of chaos, represented by the line "When this world is trying its hardest / To leave me unimpressed", and seeking refuge in a darker space.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the power of physical touch, and how it can be a source of healing and redemption. The lines, "Just one caress / From you and I'm blessed" convey the transformative power of human connection, and how it can provide comfort in times of distress. In the final verse, the singer expresses a belief that sin can make a better person, but the mood is still dark and pessimistic, leaving the singer back where they started.

Masterpiece. I love Dave's voice obviously, don't get me wrong, but Martin's is so incredible, emotional and deep. The songs he sings are so special and he is as well. Also this has that gothic vibe that I like a lot. Words can't even express how I feel about it. Thank you Martin for making me feel things no one else can, "when this world is trying its hardest to leave me unimpressed". I love you. A 22 years old devotee 🖤

Definitely one of the most under appreciated songs of Depeche Mode's entire career. In my opinion this song is the crown jewell of dark ballads.
