Deva's parents are a mystic/artist father and a musically talented mother, she was taught violin, piano and received voice training. By the time she was five years old, she was already chanting the Gayatri Mantra daily, and since that time she continues to integrate meditation into her life.
She has studied Shiatsu, Reflexology, CranioSacral Therapy and Massage, but music remains her first love. The influence of Indian classical music is evident in her singing, although she has never attempted to copy or steal from the tradition. "It just comes naturally," she says, "as if I'd heard it all before, in another life."
Among the numerous letters of appreciation she has received since the release of her albums, many describe how her music has been used to accompany and enhance the sacred passages of birth and death. In fact, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the world famous author of On Death And Dying, requested that Miten and Deva bring their music to accompany her passing. "We have played for many people," says Deva, "but to play personally for Elizabeth was something I will never forget.”

Maname aana baso.
Tuma bina laage soonaa
Khaali ghatame prema bharo.
Tantra mantra poojaa nahi jaanu
Mai to kevala tumako hi maanu.
Sare jaga me dhundaa tumako
Aba to aakara baahan dharo.
The lyrics of Deva Premal’s song ‘Prabhujee’ are a powerful call to the divine to enter one's heart, with a plea for grace and love. The opening line, “Prabhujee dayaa karo,” translates to “Lord, have mercy,” and conveys a deep sense of humility and surrender. This is followed by, “Maname aana baso,” which means “Abide in my heart.” The singer is expressing a yearning for the divine to pour into their being, taking up residence in the depths of their soul.
The next line, “Tuma bina laage soonaa,” translates to “Without you, everything is empty.” This is a statement of the fact that the singer feels empty and lost without the divine in their life. It is a sincere acknowledgment of the fundamental role of the divine in their existence. The following line, “Khaali ghatame prema bharo,” means “Fill my vessel with love.” This is a plea for the divine to pour love into the emptiness of the singer's heart, filling it with abundant and unending love.
