Deva's parents are a mystic/artist father and a musically talented mother, she was taught violin, piano and received voice training. By the time she was five years old, she was already chanting the Gayatri Mantra daily, and since that time she continues to integrate meditation into her life.
She has studied Shiatsu, Reflexology, CranioSacral Therapy and Massage, but music remains her first love. The influence of Indian classical music is evident in her singing, although she has never attempted to copy or steal from the tradition. "It just comes naturally," she says, "as if I'd heard it all before, in another life."
Among the numerous letters of appreciation she has received since the release of her albums, many describe how her music has been used to accompany and enhance the sacred passages of birth and death. In fact, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the world famous author of On Death And Dying, requested that Miten and Deva bring their music to accompany her passing. "We have played for many people," says Deva, "but to play personally for Elizabeth was something I will never forget.”

Assessu yemaya
Yemaya olodo
Olodo yemaya
A celebration of the moment when the river
meets the ocean.
Yemaya is the godess of the ocean and the
mother of all goddesses.
(Yoruba, Africa)
The lyrics of Deva Premal's Yemaya Assessu are a tribute to the goddess Yemaya in the Yoruba religion, which is practiced in Africa and the diaspora. The song begins with the words "Assessu Yemaya," which can be interpreted as a greeting or salutation to Yemaya. The phrase is repeated twice before the next line, "Yemaya Olodo," which can be translated as "Yemaya the creator." The use of the word "olodo" acknowledges Yemaya's role as the originator of life, as she is said to have been the first being to emerge from the primordial waters.
The song then continues with "Olodo Yemaya," meaning "Yemaya the creator" once again. This repetition reinforces the idea of Yemaya's power to create and sustain life. The final line of the song, "A celebration of the moment when the river meets the ocean," is a reference to the belief that Yemaya is the connector between the land and the sea, and that the meeting of these two bodies of water represents renewal and regeneration. The song, therefore, celebrates the power and majesty of Yemaya in bringing forth new life and vitality.
Yemaya Assessu has become a popular devotional song in the Yoruba and Afro-Caribbean communities. It is often sung during rituals and ceremonies dedicated to Yemaya, as well as during other spiritual practices. The song's rhythm and melody are believed to invoke the sea and the power of the goddess, allowing practitioners to connect with her energy and receive her blessings.
