The song “Hasafah” by Diana Haddad is a poetic reflection on a failed relationship, with the singer expressing her betrayal and heartbreak after her significant other has left her. The title “Hasafah” roughly translates to “what a shame,” a common phrase used in Arabic to express regret or disappointment. The opening lyrics reveal the singer’s feelings of betrayal, as she accuses her former lover of abandoning her at the beginning of their journey together. The line “you betrayed the love, oh traitor” has a strong emotional impact, emphasizing the singer’s feelings of betrayal and loss.
The second stanza turns to the singer’s pain and forgetfulness in the aftermath of the breakup. She is so consumed by her grief that she forgets that time continues to move forward, despite her pain. The third stanza is a response to her former lover’s attempt to reconcile, with the singer rejecting the offer and expressing her anger and frustration. She has moved on and does not want to hear any excuses or reasons.
Throughout the song, the singer repeats the phrase “Hasafah” and the line “I forgot that time is circular,” emphasizing her regrets and resistance to forgiving her former lover. The melancholic melody and Haddad’s emotive vocals add to the poignancy of the lyrics, creating a powerful and affecting song.
