Estamos a 16 de novembro de 1964, na Colúmbia Britânica, no Canadá. É aí, no seio de uma família musical, que nasce uma pequena bebé que anos mais tarde seria consagrada como uma talentosa artista, talvez a mais brilhante da sua família. Neste post, é de Diana Krall que falo, recontando a história desta artista de jazz que tem conquistado o mundo com a sua voz talentosa.
Não é de admirar que Diana Krall tenha começado a tocar piano aos quatro anos. A sua mãe era professora do ensino primário e o pai um contabilista. À partida, estas são carreiras que têm em si pouco de musical. No entanto, a verdade é que muita música se fazia no lar dos Krall. O pai, para começar, costumava tocar piano regularmente no piano lá em casa. Entretanto, a mãe fazia parte de um coro comunitário. Raízes musicais não faltaram a Diana Krall.
Aos quinze anos, começou a tocar regularmente em vários restaurantes de Nanaimo. Terá sido assim que a técnica de Diana Krall chamou a atenção do guitarrista Ray Brown, que a apresentou a diversos professores e produtores. Aos 17 anos, a jovem artista canadiana ganha uma bolsa para estudar no Berklee College Of Music em Boston, Massachusetts. Passado algum tempo, muda-se para Los Angeles, Califórnia, passando a estudar com Jimmy Rowles, com quem começou a cantar.
De Los Angeles Krall passou brevemente por Toronto, mas em 1990 instala-se em Nova Iorque e incia uma fase determinante da sua carreira. É neste meio que integra um trio mas que, mais importante ainda, encontra a oportunidade para gravar o seu primeiro álbum Steppin’ Out, editado pela Justin Time Records. No ano seguinte sai Only Trust Your Heart, mas sob a tutela da GRP.
Em 1995 uma nova mudança e um novo álbum: Diana Krall assina pela Impulse! e edita "All for You", um disco de homenagem a Nat King Cole. Dois anos depois segue-se Love Scenes, um álbum que incluí alguns dos mais preciosos standarts de jazz. E, já no final de 1998, é a vez de Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, um EP alusivo à quadra natalícia. Em 1999 Diana regressa com When I Look in Your Eyes, o seu trabalho mais aclamado até então e que lhe vale um Grammy.
As expectativas eram grandes quanto ao sucessor de "When I Look in Your Eyes" e ele surge em 2001 com o nome "The Look of Love". O álbum, gravado com a Orquestra Sinfónica de Londres, chega ao Disco de Ouro em Portugal aquando da sua edição e, duas semanas mais tarde, alcança mesmo o número um do top de vendas nacional. Facto inédito para uma artista de jazz no nosso país.
Em 2004, o álbum "The girl in the other room" revela o lado mais intimista e sedutor de Diana Krall, que recorre a um grande leque de compositores, desde Tom Waits até ao seu marido.
O início do milénio foi também agitado para a artista mas por motivos mais pessoais. Em 2002, a sua mãe morre, vítima de cancro. No ano seguinte, a artista casa com o britânico Elvis Costello. E não muito depois, em 2006, tem dois gémeos, Dexter Henry Lorcan e Frank Harlan James. Nesse mesmo ano em setembro lança o disco "From this Moment On", o melhor da sua discografia na minha opinião. A maternidade, ainda por cima dupla, afasta-a do mundo da música durante os três anos que se seguem.
O regresso acontece com "Quiet Nights". A partir daí, o ritmo de lançamento de um novo álbum deixa de ser anual e, até ao momento, acontece de três em três anos. Em 2012, Diana Krall lança Glad Rag Doll e, em 2015, Wallflower.
