Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.
Can Anyone Explain?
Dick Haymes Lyrics

No! No! No!
But when two eager lips are pressed against yours
You'll know, yes, you'll know
Can anyone explain the glow of romance
No! No! No!
But when you hear the phrase "It's you I adore"
And you will find, to give love a start
Don't think with your mind, just feel with your heart
Can anyone explain the wonder of love
No! No! No!
But now that you and I are sharing a sigh
We know, yes, we know
And you will find, to give love a start
Don't think with your mind, just feel with your heart
Can anyone explain the wonder of love
No! No! No!
But now that you and I are sharing a sigh
We know, yes, we know
The lyrics to "Can Anyone Explain?" by Dick Haymes evoke a sense of mystery and wonder about the experience of love. The song asks a series of questions about the different aspects of love, such as the thrill of a kiss, the glow of romance, and the wonder of love. However, the answer to each question is always "No," suggesting that love cannot be fully explained or understood intellectually. Instead, the song suggests that love is something that must be felt with the heart, rather than analyzed with the mind.
The lyrics also suggest that love is not an individual experience, but something that is shared between two people. The lines "But when two eager lips are pressed against yours / You'll know, yes, you'll know" suggest that the experience of a kiss is not just about one person's feelings, but about the connection between two people. Similarly, the line "now that you and I are sharing a sigh / We know, yes, we know" suggests that the wonder of love is something that is experienced together, rather than alone.
Overall, "Can Anyone Explain?" captures the ineffable and often indescribable nature of love, suggesting that it is a deeply emotional and shared experience that cannot be fully explained or understood intellectually.
