Candles
Dirty Vegas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're going down
And it feels good
But you ain't wearing
What you should
All the people that you've had?
The Time is over

Count your blessings
Count the times
You forgot their names
Committed the crimes
All the people that you've had?
The time over

Oh ! It's time to make amends
Cause you've been
Burning the candle at both ends

Oh! It's time to make amends

Cause you've been
Burning the candle at both ends

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Dirty Vegas's "Candles" are intriguing and carry a powerful message about the consequences of our actions. The song talks about someone who is living life in the fast lane and indulging in their pleasures without any concern for the effect it may have on them or others. The first verse opens up with the line "You're going down, and it feels good," which implies that the person is enjoying the thrill of their reckless behavior. However, it instantly takes a turn by raising a concern about their attire, "But you ain't wearing what you should," which suggests that this behavior has repercussions and that they might be not dressed for the downfall that is to come. The next line, "All the people that you've had? The time is over," could refer to their promiscuity or the people that they have used or hurt, and the realization that their time of playing games is up.

The chorus urges the person to reflect on their choices and make amends before it's too late. It talks about "burning the candle at both ends," a metaphor that refers to living life recklessly until there's nothing left. It warns the person that their lifestyle is going to catch up to them one day, and they need to take responsibility for their actions. The second verse continues with the same theme of reminiscing on their actions, "Count your blessings, count the times you forgot their names, committed the crimes." It's clear that the singer has lived a reckless and selfish life without any thought or consideration for others.

In conclusion, "Candles" by Dirty Vegas is an introspective song that examines the hidden consequences of living a fast and reckless life. It's a thoughtful message to those who take risks without considering the long-term effects that their actions might have.

@Erin Silveira Unfortunately their style has evolved so far beyond what was presented in the debut album that it is now nearly unrecognizable.  It's practically pop.

When I was deployed - when this came out (I actually bought this CD at the PX in Afghanistan, not knowing all that it was), and I listened to this song over, and over, and over, and over, and over, endlessly I could not feed myself enough, I could not satisfy my craving to hear this song. I was addicted. The emotional energy behind it resonates with me so much, the tension within this song makes me want to find a catharsis. It actually reminded me of a girl I was once with...
