A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes 1950
Disney Lyrics

A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you will loose your heartache
Whatever you wish for you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true

A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're feeling small
Alone in the night you whisper
Thinking no-one can hear you at all
You wake with the morning sunlight
To find fortune that is smiling on you
Don't let your heart be filled with sorrow
For all you know tomorrow
The dream that you wish will come true

A dream is a wish your heart makes
A dream is a wish your heart makes

You wake with the morning sunlight
To find fortune that is smiling on you
Don't let your heart be filled with sorrow
For all you know tomorrow
The dream that you wish will come true

No matter how your heart is grieving

If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true

Overall Meaning

"A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" is a song from the 1950 film, Cinderella. The song is written by Mack David, Jerry Livingston, and Al Hoffman. The song is sung by Cinderella (voiced by Ilene Woods) and expresses the power of hope and dreaming. The song asserts that dreaming is a powerful tool towards overcoming adversity and finding true happiness. The lyrics suggest that no aspiration is impossible, no matter the pain and suffering of our lives.

In the first verse of the song, the lyrics suggest that dreams are a powerful motivator when we are feeling powerless. They encourage us to keep our hopes up even when we are sleeping and that the earliest desires of our hearts whisper to us when we are at our most vulnerable. Similarly, in the second verse, the lyrics suggest that hope is a powerful tool for overcoming feelings of loneliness; the positive change that will come with a desire emerges after a period of darkness in one's life.

The chorus then provides the summary of the song as it adds that if we keep on believing, we will surely live our dream one day. The song reminds us of the importance of celebrating our dreams and being passionate about what we seek. By remaining true to our principles and beliefs, we will experience the joy and happiness that come with attainment. The ultimate message is that through the power of positive thinking, hard work, and perseverance, it is possible to overcome all obstacles and fulfill our dreams.

I understand, people always loved Cinderella and call her brave. Cinderella was always popular but I wouldn't call her one of the bravest princesses..

Pocahontas was the person who helped to reduce tensions between the Native Americans and the English colonists !
She saved the male protagonist and her people while constantly dealing with racism, ignorance, violence and hate speech.

Mulan saved her entire country and brought honor to her family, while she was oppressed by the men and their rules all the time.

Tiana ,well I don't have to say much about Tiana. She is one of the greatest character, and way more underappreciated than Cinderella.

Cinderella was brave, but her story wasn't so interesting for me.. It was mostly focused on a man and a shallow love story. It would be much more interesting if we could see more about her past etc.

No problem!!

I’m Japanese.🇯🇵😀
I’m good at reading English, but I’m not good at speaking English.🥺

I wrote it for myself.
When I want to learn this song, it’s too fast to sing for me.😞
I think this song is very slow, but I thought it’s very hard one year ago.😖
Thank you again for your good thoughts.🥰

What really gets to me is that Cinderella's voice actress had Alzheimer's disease later on and forgot she voiced Cinderella or even worked with disney but the nurses that took care of her always played this for her she loved it

@keegster7167

Wow; I did not know that, but that is an interesting thought. It's interesting that she liked the song yet she didn't know she sang it.

as a victim of abuse, it's unsurprising that dreams were cinderella's refuge. I wish people remembered that when they complain about how she wasn't feminist or was waiting for a savior. She was abused! And she didn't even want the prince to begin with - all she wanted was a night of freedom.

@SevenEllen

I think she wanted a LIFE of freedom. I daresay her dream, her wish, was to marry the prince and live in the palace. Her dream came true at the end of the film.

@ellaczeiner3974

People complain about how cinderella wasn't feminist when she was the kindest and most selfless disney princess despite her situation. Feminist doesn't have to mean rejecting traditional femininity. Also her movie is way more feminist than most Disney movies as it has a well written female protagonist, female antagonist, female side antagonists, and female side characters. The prince was more of an afterthought in Cinderella's mind. And not to mention that over half of the dialogue was women in Cinderella compared to the more "feminist" princess movies of the Disney rennasaince where on average women only got less than one forth of the total dialogue.

@not Ella well said :)
