Gather around, I’ve got a story to tell.
(Please accept my apologies if you thought I was going to follow that with “About a Manhattan lady that I know very well.”)
A couple months ago, a baby African elephant—a boy—was born at the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky. A naming contest was held to name the little fellow. Lots of entries came in, and zookeepers narrowed the entries down to three.
The winning name was Fitz. I gotta say, Fitz is a cute name. It FITZ him well!
But as adorable a name as Fitz is, that’s not what I’m here to discuss. That’s not the—pardon my pun—elephant in the room.
The other two names chosen for the final three? Oh, you’re going to love them.
One was “Rocket”, after Rocket Raccoon, because a while back, there had been a baby bongo antelope—a boy, named Groot—born at the Louisville Zoo.
The other was “Walt”. Yes, it was after Walt Disney.
Oh my goodness. Oh my stars and garters.
One thing I wonder is: why suggest the honor of naming this elephant after Mr. Disney? Did he have relatives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom?
(I know who submitted that name for the contest—it was in a news article—but I won’t name them. I don’t want to embarrass them.)
I love the name Fitz. Great name. Don’t get me wrong. Fitz he is, and Fitz he shall stay.
But just the thought of someone saying “how about naming this elephant after Walt Disney?” is enough to get me all starry-eyed.

Is it just me or is the best part of Disneyland the statue of Walt holding Mickeys hand, showing him the beautiful world?
Jack Carter
I love that statue very much, as does my grandmother. She was given a 8" version of it and she treasures it. It's just a man with a pure vision showing his creation the world, as the world comes to see his creation
