Eglantine
Disney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let us strike a bargain, you possess a gift
But I can speak the jargon
That can give your gift the needed lift
You possess the know-how
And I command the show-how
Oh, how successful you could be with me

Eglantine, Eglantine
Oh, how y'all shine
Your lot and my lot have got to combine
Eglantine, Eglantine
Hark to the stars
Destiny calls us
The future is ours

As the shine sells the boot,
And the blossoms the fruit
All you need to succeed in your plan
Is the proper ally upon whom to rely
And I'm your man
For I have an acumen that's nigh superhuman
I sell things that nobody can
So I humbly suggest
You accept to my behest
I'm your man

Eglantine, Eglantine
Oh, how y'all shine
Your lot and my lot have got to combine
Eglantine, Eglantine
Hark to the stars
Destiny calls us the future is ours

With my expert pantomiming
The proper taste and timing
I'll introduce you in the manner grand
I'll wet their appetite for you
I'll set the scene so right for you
We'll have the beggars eating out of your hand
As the words sell the tune
And the moonbeams the moon, all you need to succeed in your plan
Is a champion rare, with a flourish and a flair
And I'm your man

I have always had a bit of a knack for witchcraft
Common spells and simple charms came naturally
So when the war began, I conjured up a plan
To do my bit in the national emergency

I enrolled in your Correspondence College of Witchcraft
And I slaved at every lesson as it came.
But the spell I counted on,
Is the lesson that is gone
It's disappeared, and you're the one to blame

Your suggestions are rash and your manner is brash
And I've no time to waste, Mister Brown
If I am to proceed, it's that book that I need
Don't let me down
But if you'll see me through
I'll discuss it with you
Though I've no taste for playing the clown
If I meet with success, then I might acquiesce

I won't let you down
Eglantine, Eglantine
Oh, how y'all shine
Your lot and my lot have got to combine
Eglantine, Eglantine
Hark to the stars

Destiny calls us, the future is ours

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Eglantine" from Disney's movie showcase a conversation between two characters, where one is pitching their skills and abilities to the other in order to form a partnership that could lead to success. The song emphasizes the importance of collaboration and finding the right ally to achieve one's goals. The first paragraph sets the tone for the negotiation, with one character acknowledging the talents of the other and proposing a mutually beneficial arrangement. The mention of possessing the "know-how" and "show-how" suggests a complementary skill set that could lead to great success if combined.

In the following verses, the character Eglantine is urged to consider the potential of working together, with the repeated refrain of "Eglantine, Eglantine" underscoring the importance of their partnership. The lyrics touch on themes of destiny, shining bright, and the future being in their hands, creating a sense of optimism and possibility. The idea of fate and collaboration is highlighted, hinting at the potential for achieving greatness together.

The third paragraph delves deeper into the specifics of what each character brings to the table, emphasizing the importance of finding the right ally to support one's plans for success. The character pitching their skills as being almost superhuman and offering unique abilities and connections that could help Eglantine achieve her goals. The lyrics stress the value of having a champion with flair and expertise, painting a picture of a powerful alliance that could lead to triumph.

The final paragraph introduces a twist, with Eglantine expressing hesitance and reservations about the proposed partnership. She acknowledges her own talents and abilities in witchcraft but expresses doubt about the other character's suggestions and approach. The lyrics reveal a conflict between the desire for success and the need for authenticity and integrity, culminating in a tentative agreement to work together if certain conditions are met. The song concludes with a reaffirmation of destiny and the promise of a shared future, leaving the outcome open-ended and full of possibility.

RIP Angela, may you and David entertain others with your gifts with this classical masterpiece forever.

@12classics39

Omg when he pushes her around on the ladder singing "Eglantine Eglantine" over her yells of "MR. BROWN!" … it’s one of the funniest scenes ever!

Prof. Emelius Browne

@Nedyah74

This movie is truly hilarious. I just love how she is trying to do important research and he is just basically trolling her.

@jamesk8075

This is how you had to troll prior to the Internet. You had to plan your choreography and wait patiently for the perfect moment. And then you would make an approach like at 1:48

@thebackup2121

Was just thinking about how funny and charming this film was - I think I'll give it a watch today 😄

@FirstnameLastname-gy2ci

They're in love duh

@caramel7149

As a kid i thought it was so awesome how he wanted to help her achieve her dreams. Looking back at this as an adult, he was singing a love song. Miss Price had given up on love, so she didn't think for a moment about that deeper meaning at the time.

@justinwallace390

Yea, but she fell for him in the end. Brilliant movie.

@MediaLover194

The Sherman Brothers' lyrics are probably some of the best to ever come out of the Disney canon.
