The trio is currently ranked as the highest-selling female musical group in the USA, according to RIAA Gold & Platinum album certifications. As of 2012, The Chicks had won 13 Grammy Awards. While The Chicks continues, Maguire and Robison are writing and recording as Court Yard Hounds as of Feb 2010. The Dixie Chicks renamed the band in 2020 to The Chicks dropping Dixie from the official name as the name had the word 'Dixie' referencing the American Mason–Dixon line, which separated the free and slave-owning southern states.
Robin Lynn Macy was an original bandmember, as was Laura Lynch. Macy left the group in 1992, while Lynch was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995.
The group aroused considerable controversy for publicly denouncing President George W. Bush and the imminent invasion of Iraq during the European leg of their Top of the World tour supporting Home. Many country music stations immediately pulled their music from the air, and the band received criticism from many corners of the media.

The singer recalls their intimate moments together, remembering how sweet their kisses were and how she yearns for them to be reunited once more.
As the dream fades, the woman finds herself unable to move on. She struggles to cope with the loss, and the memories of her former love seem to be all-consuming. The song suggests that the woman has tried various coping mechanisms, but nothing has worked. She is haunted by the melody of their song, unable to rid herself of the memory and the pain it brings. Last night I dreamed you were back again
I had a dream where you came back to me, just like how things used to be
Larger than life again, holding me tight again
In this dream, you were an even bigger presence than before, holding me closely
Placing those same kisses on my brow
You were still showing me affection with the same kind of kisses you used to give me on my forehead
Couldn't get enough of kissin'
I enjoyed being kissed by you so much, I wanted more and more
Sweeter than ever now, Lord, I remember how
The kisses were even more enjoyable and loving than in my memories
No you don't, but I do
You might not know how much I miss you, but I definitely do
Do you know how much I'm missin'?
I wonder if you understand the extent to which I am missing you
Even the words that I write, refuse to fly
I'm having trouble expressing my feelings through writing, as they don't seem to come out correctly
All that I can hear is your song haunting me
Your voice and the memories of our time together keep replaying in my head like a haunting song
Distractions I've been using
I've been trying to distract myself from thinking about you
Can't get the melody out of my head you see
But nothing seems to work, the memories of you still persist and take over my thoughts
Days like a slow train trickle by
The days feel like they're passing by slowly, like a train moving at a snail's pace
Do you know how much you're losing?
I wonder if you realize how much you are missing out on by not being with me
I do
But I definitely know and can see what you're missing out on
And I wonder if I'm past the point of rescue
I'm starting to question whether or not there's anything that can help me get over you
I never meant to push or shove you
I never intended to push you away or treat you badly
Is no word from you at all the best that you can do?
I'm disappointed in the fact that you haven't reached out to me, and I'm wondering if that's really the best decision you could make
Do you know how much I love you?
I hope you know just how much I care for you and how deep my love for you really is
No you don't, but I do
You may not understand my love for you, but I certainly do
