There's Your Trouble
Dixiechicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should have been different but
It wasn't different, was it
Same old story, dear John, and so long
Should have fit like a glove
Should have fit like a ring
Like a diamond ring
A token of true love
Should have all worked out
But it didn't
She should be here now
But she isn't

There's your trouble, there's your trouble
You keep seeing double with the wrong one
You can't see I love you, you can't see she doesn't
But you just keep holding on
There's your trouble

So now you're thinking 'bout
All you're missing how
Deep you're sinking, round and round and dragging down
Why don't you cash in your chips
Why don't you call it a loss
Not such a big loss, chalk it up to better luck
Could have been true love
But it wasn't
It should all add up
But it doesn't

There's your trouble, there's your trouble
You keep seeing double with the wrong one
You can't see I love you, you can't see she doesn't
But you just keep holding on
There's your trouble

Should have all worked out
But it didn't
She should be here now
But she isn't

There's your trouble, there's your trouble
You keep seeing double with the wrong one
And you can't see I love you, you can't see she doesn't
But you just keep holding on
There's your trouble
There's your trouble

There's your trouble
There's your trouble, there is your trouble

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "There's Your Trouble" by Dixie Chicks tells the story of unrequited love, of a woman who has perhaps missed out on the opportunity to be with the man she loves because he is preoccupied with someone else who does not love him back. In the first verse, the singer expresses regret that things did not turn out differently. She had hoped for a perfect fit, a true love forever, but instead, she has been left alone. The singer implies that the man's attention is misplaced and he should be with her instead.

The chorus is built around the idea that the man has trouble seeing what is right in front of him. He keeps seeing double with the wrong person and can't recognize that the singer loves him, while the other woman doesn't. He clings on to this other woman even though it is harming him. He is stubbornly holding onto something that is not working, even though it is causing him pain.

In the second verse, the singer calls the man out on his behavior. She tells him that he needs to let go of this other woman and accept his loss. She suggests that he should move on because this situation is not healthy. She tries to provide him with some perspective by telling him that it is just one setback, and it should be seen as a minor setback in his search for genuine love.
