Don't Cry for Me Argentina
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me, all you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel

Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom, running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to

Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is, I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you, and hope you love me
Don't cry for me, Argentina

Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is, I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you

But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true

Overall Meaning

The song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the musical Evita, tells the story of the charismatic political figure Eva Perón. In this song, Eva Perón bids farewell to Argentina and insists her legacy is secure. The lyrics speak about the misunderstanding and criticism she faced throughout her life. The phrase "you'll think it strange" suggests the difficulty in communicating her emotions and actions to the public. The following line, "That I still need your love after all that I've done," alludes to the negative perception people had of her despite her good intentions. The line "Although she's dressed up to the nines, at sixes and sevens with you," further highlights the disparity between her external appearance and her real-life experience.

Eva reflects on her journey in the lines "Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun. So I chose freedom, running around trying everything new. But nothing impressed me at all. I never expected it to." These lyrics signify the constant search for satisfaction and fulfillment, but ultimately realizing that everything she was looking for was already in her grasp. The final verse, "And as for fortune, and as for fame, I never invited them in. Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired. They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be. The answer was here all the time. I love you, and hope you love me. Don't cry for me, Argentina," reiterates that her true desire was for love and connection and that she had never left Argentina.

IMO, the most under appreciated singer in the last 50 years. What range and power. Sadly, she was classified as a disco singer but she was so much more. I was lucky enough to see her live twice... outdoors in Atlanta in the summer, nonetheless... and I was moved to tears multiple times each concert.

@John-dd5dh

Donna's voice was so lush and beautiful, that's what made her a diva.

@JasGould-sh3fh

Woah didn't know Donna had ever sung this beautiful song. A truly sublime performance. Just magical..

@LuizlourencoDS

This woman is one of the best voices of all time!

@stephenalberston9108

Admittedly....this particular song has some of the greatest vocalists singing it....check them out on youtube....but my humble opinion is that Donna's version is not only pitch perfect....she also embraces and communicates the message of hope and love to the Argentine people in such a precarious time of their history through her God-given gift of voice. Hers was clearly the best version!

@briedewayne071

Donna's cover of Don't Cry For Me Argentina is arguably THE FINEST VERSION EVER...
