Biography:
Donnie McClurkin is a gospel vocalist with the soul of AndraΓ© Crouch and the contemporary flair of Kirk Franklin. Born into a home filled with domestic violence and drug abuse, McClurkin was saved by an aunt who sang background vocals with Crouch himself. After staying close to Crouch throughout his boyhood, he began to play piano and sing with his church youth choir. He formed the McClurkin Singers by the time he was a teenager, and later formed another group, the New York Restoration Choir.
Hired as an associate minister at Marvin Winans' Perfecting Church in 1989, with his vocals during a seminar, McClurkin endured a bout with leukemia that year. A friendship with a Warner Alliance executive resulted in his signing to the label for his 1996 self-titled LP, with producers Mark Kibble (of Take 6), Cedric and Victor Maxwell plus AndraΓ© Crouch. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Donnie McClurkin is a Gospel superstar whose voice is recognized around the world. His voice has already transcended the Sunday morning pulpit to the top of record charts where his music has remained steadfast while reaching gold and platinum status.
While on an airplane, God gave him the words for the song βStand,β and, he says, in 20 minutes the words flowed inside his head. βHow do you deal with the shame of your pastβ¦you stand,β he continues repeating the words.
McClurkin has been able to overcome and excel to the point that fans, celebrities and a cross section of music lovers recognize his talent as βspecial.β
In 1983, while working with the choir, McClurkin met the Reverend Marvin L. Winans. Impressed by McClurkinβs performance a gospel workshop seminar, Winans invited McClurkin to Detroit to help start a ministry. Six years later, in 1989, McClurkin moved to Detroit, became an associate minister at Perfecting Church and began touring and singing at different churches across the country.
At age 31, Donnie was diagnosed with leukemia. But at 36, with church, music and an unyielding faith, Reverend McClurkin hit gold with his debut album and changed his life.
McClurkin is head pastor at Perfecting Faith Church, a nondenominational Pentecostal church in Freeport, New York with a 1,000-plus congregation. He is home for the services every Sunday unless traveling overseas.
This Grammy award winning artist may sing for presidents, but heβs known for βbeing real.β And whether in his local church pulpit or on a stage before thousands, he preaches a forthright, often-provocative message about his troubled past, and his faith in God. Music, he says, is his sermon.

Lord, I will lift my eyes to the hills
Knowing my help is coming from you
Your peace you give me in times of the storm
You are the source of my strength, hallelujah
And you are the strength of my life, yes you are
Lord, I will lift (sing along, sing along) my eyes to the hills (sing along)
Knowing my help (comes from you) is coming from you
Your peace, you give me in times of the storm
Your peace, you give me (in times of the storm) in times of the storm
Lift your voice and say you are
You are the source of my strength
Ahh you are
You are the strength of my life
I lift my hands
And I lift my hands in total praise to You
Sing to the Lord, sing to the Lord, sing to the Lord
Everyone lift your voice and say
You are
You are the source of my strength
There is nobody else, nobody else
You are the strength of my life
Lord, Jesus, I will lift up
I lift my hands in total praise to you
Amen, Amen
To the glory of God say
Amen, Amen
To the glory of God raise your voice and say
Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen (sing to God and say)
Oh!
Say you are
You are the source of my strength
The lyrics to Donnie McClurkin's song Total Praise are a testament to unwavering faith in God. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that they will look to the hills, meaning they will look to God for their help. The lyrics dive deep into this idea of a dependence on God, making it clear that He is the source of the singer's strength and the strength of their life. The line "your peace you give me in times of the storm" refers to the comfort and shelter God provides during turbulent times. The chorus is a declaration of praise, with the singer lifting their hands in total praise to God. The end of the song features a repeating chorus with the lyrics "Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen" emphasizing the singer's desire to continue to praise God.
Overall, the song is a powerful display of faith and devotion. The imagery of looking to the hills suggests a feeling of smallness and perhaps insignificance in the grand scheme of things. The storm imagery suggests chaos and tumult, yet even amidst this, the singer finds peace in God. The repetition of phrases seems to emphasize their importance, and the chorus is a testament to the singer's willingness to surrender to God.
