The opening line in the Danish language, "I har alle bevidnet et l?nge kendt ritual. Konger dor pa denne vis," translates to, "You have all witnessed an ancient ritual. Kings die in this way." These lyrics reference the Blood Eagle, a cruel method of execution practiced by Vikings in which the victim's ribs are pulled open from the back and their lungs are pulled out to create bloody wings resembling an eagle. The story recounted in the lyrics is that of the capture and execution of King Aella of Northumberland, who was said to have killed the father of the Viking warrior Ivarr Ragnarsson. The song describes in gruesome detail the Blood Eagle being performed on Aella.
