Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Both Sides Now
Doris Day Lyrics

And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I′ve looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It′s cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I′ve looked at life that way
Oh, but now old friends they′re acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
But something′s lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I′ve looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life′s illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
In Doris Day's classic song "Both Sides Now," she explores the theme of perspective and how our understanding of the world can shift over time. In the opening verse, she describes looking at clouds as a child and seeing "rows and flows of angel hair" and "ice cream castles in the air." These whimsical images represent the innocence and wonder of youth, where even the mundane can seem magical. However, as she has grown older, the clouds have lost their enchantment and become a hindrance, blocking the sun and bringing rain and snow. The lyrics reflect how our perceptions of the world can change as we gain life experience.
In the second verse, Day juxtaposes different emotions and experiences she has felt in her life. She has felt both tears and fears as well as feeling proud to express love openly. She has dreamed big and encountered circus crowds, but now finds herself feeling estranged from old friends who see her as changed. Despite this, Day acknowledges that something has also been gained in living every day, likely referring to the wisdom and insight gained through past experiences. The chorus repeats the phrase "I've looked at life from both sides now" to emphasize the theme of perspective and how our understanding of the world can shift and evolve.
