Calamity Jane: Just Blew in From the Windy City
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty pretty
But they ain't got what we got, no sirree
They've got shacks up to seven stories
Never see any Morning Glory's
But a step from our doorway
We got 'em for free
They've got those minstrel shows
Pretty ladies in the big chateau's
Private lawns, public parks
For the sake of civic virtue
They've got fountains there that squirt you

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty pretty
But they ain't got what we got
I'm tellin' ya, boys
We got more life in Deadwood City
Than in all of Illinois

You should-a seen me a-windo' shoppin'
A-windo' shoppin' with eyes a-poppin'
At the sights that you see there, yes sirree
Press a bell and a moment later
Up you go in an elevator
Just as fast as a polecat a-climbin' a tree

I heard claim hundreds came
To a thing they call a baseball game
Cigar stores, revolving doors
They got new inventions coming
'Stead of outdoor, indoor plumbing

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty pretty
But they ain't got what we got
I'm tellin' ya, boys

I ain't a-swappin' half of Deadwood
For the whole of Illinois

Overall Meaning

In Doris Day's song "Just Blew In from the Windy City," the singer portrays herself as someone who has just arrived in the Windy City and is comparing it to where she's from, Deadwood City. She starts off by saying that the Windy City is pretty, but they don't have what they have in Deadwood City. She goes on to describe how in the Windy City, the buildings are tall shacks, and you can't find any morning glories. Meanwhile, in Deadwood City, they have them for free just outside their doorstep. She then describes other things the Windy City has like minstrel shows and big chateaus, but what they don't have is the kind of life that Deadwood City has. She ends by saying that she wouldn't trade half of Deadwood City for the whole of Illinois.

The song perfectly encapsulates the divide between rural and urban areas, a theme that's still present today. The singer is comparing the more rural Deadwood City to the more urban Windy City and finds that they have their own unique charms. The song also does a great job of showing how people tend to think their hometowns are the best, no matter what other cities they visit or live in.
