Foggy Day
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a stranger in the city
Out of town were the people I knew
I had that feeling of self-pity
What to do? What to do? What to do?
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known
A foggy day in London Town
Had me low and had me down
I viewed the morning with alarm
The British Museum had lost its charm
How long, I wondered, could this thing last?
But the age of miracles hadn't passed,
For, suddenly, I saw you there

And through foggy London Town
The sun was shining everywhere.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Doris Day's "Foggy Day" tell the story of a person who is feeling down and out in the big city. They are a stranger in town, away from their familiar surroundings and the people they know, and are overwhelmed with self-pity. The outlook is bleak, with the city shrouded in fog and even the British Museum losing its charm. However, as the person walks through the foggy streets alone, they suddenly spot someone they know, and everything changes. The sun seems to shine everywhere, despite the lingering fog.

The song is all about unexpected moments of brightness in the midst of hard times. It suggests that even when things seem hopeless and despairing, small moments of joy can be found, often when they are least expected. The foggy London Town serves here as a metaphor for the difficult times life throws our way; although it can be hard to keep going through them, sometimes good things can emerge from the darkness if we just keep walking and looking out for them.

The lyrics are simple yet poignant, and Doris Day's singing style perfectly captures the bittersweet mood of the song. Altogether, "Foggy Day" is a classic example of a sentimental ballad that touches on universal emotions and experiences that audiences can relate to.
