Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Hello My Lover Goodbye
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's nothing left but the
Tiniest glimmer of hope
Where is the one who will make my life sunlit
Where is the kiss that will mean more
Than one little flame Standing out in shame
As I have romed around, I’ve always found
That love will come and love will die
There often came a night that brought delight
But ended with a lonely cry
It's always hello, my lover, goodbye
I would be clay within love’s hands
I would obey all love's commands
Yet, like the ever shifting sands
I drift away
I only hope to find some peace of mind
And put an end to wond'ring why
It's always hello, my lover, goodbye
I would be clay within love's hands
I would obey all love's commands
Yet, like the ever shifting sands
I drift away
I only hope to find some peace of mind
And put an end to wond'ring why
It's always hello, my lover, goodbye
The lyrics of Doris Day's song "Hello My Lover Goodbye" express a sense of weariness and resignation towards the ups and downs of love. Overall, the song seems to suggest that the singer has been through many relationships and has experienced both the joys and sorrows of falling in love. However, despite her willingness to be "clay within love's hands" and follow its every command, she has never been able to find lasting happiness in love.
The opening lines of the song set the stage for its melancholy tone, as the singer describes love as a "legend grown dimmer and dimmer." She goes on to describe her search for the one who will bring "sunlit" happiness to her life, and the one kiss that will mean more than just a passing flame. However, she has not yet found that person, and instead feels as though she's constantly stuck in a cycle of fleeting relationships ("It's always hello, my lover, goodbye").
The second half of the song features a repetition of the same chorus and verses, emphasizing the singer's feelings of frustration and resignation. She describes herself as drifting away like "shifting sands," and expresses her desire to find some peace of mind and end her wondering about why love seems so elusive and temporary. While the words are somewhat sad, the gentle melody and the sweetness of Doris Day's voice lend a certain wistful charm to the song that makes it feel ultimately hopeful.
