I Ain
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though folks with good intentions
Tell me to save my tears
Well I'm so mad about him
I can't live without him

Never treats me sweet and gentle
The way he should
I've got it bad
And that ain't good

My poor heart is so sentimental
Not made of wood
I've got it so bad
And that ain't good

But when the fish are jumpin'
And Friday rolls around
My man an' I, we gin some
We pray some, and sin some

He don't love me like I love him
The way he should
I've got it bad
And that ain't good

Yes I've got it bad
And that ain't good

Overall Meaning

In Doris Day's song "I Got It Bad and I Ain't Good," the singer expresses her intense love and desire for a man who does not treat her well. Despite the advice of others to move on and save her tears, she cannot imagine life without him. She laments that he does not treat her with the care and tenderness she deserves, and yet her heart remains hopelessly sentimental and unable to move on from her feelings for him.

The lyrics of the song capture the complex and often painful experience of being deeply in love with someone who does not reciprocate those feelings fully. The singer's emotions are a mix of desire, frustration, and confusion. She knows that her love is not good for her in the long run, but she cannot help feeling drawn to the man who treats her poorly.

Throughout the song, the singer alludes to moments of joy and connection with this man, such as when they "gin some, pray some, and sin some." However, these moments are juxtaposed with the sadness and heartbreak that she experiences the rest of the time. The lyrics convey the sense that the singer's love for this man is consuming and overwhelming, and that she is powerless to do anything about it.

This is pure heaven to watch 💞

@akrenwinkle

Mary Wickes played domestics, nurses, and such... good, industrious workers you could rely on, but she doesn't take any guff from anybody. I think everyone here has seen her countless times and still gets a warm, familiar feeling the moment she's in a scene, no matter what film.

@hudsony777

Remember her in "Now, Voyager"?

@raylenenielsen5943

As a little girl I thought men/ boys in their suit pants and vests were so handsome. Now here I am almost 50 and I wish suits were made like they used to be and still came with vests. I mean, seriously, isn’t Gordon Macrae just as handsome as he can be in that vest?!

@kat35lulu88

Yes he sure is! I agree with you 200%. Even if a man was a little (or a lot) rough around the edges, a nice set of clothes made all the difference.

Thank you so much for this. I'm sitting here with my Mums ashes. She passed in December. Born in 1942, she loved Doris Day. I just watched this for the last time with my Mum.Tomorrow I lay her to rest next to Dad.R.I.P. Doris Day, Josephine and Bruce Hunter.x

This isn’t much of a showcase for Gordon MacRae’s fabulous voice, but I agree....they ‘got’ fun!
