Mean to Me
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're mean to me
Why must you be mean to me?
Gee, honey, it seems to me
You love to see me cryin'
I don't know why
I stay home each night
When you say you phone
You don't and I'm left alone.
Sing the blues and sighin'
You treat me coldly each day in the year
You always scold me
Whenever somebody is near, dear
I must be great fun to be mean to me

You shouldn't, for can't you see
What you mean to me

Overall Meaning

Doris Day's "Mean to Me" is a 1929 jazz standard with lyrics by Roy Turk and music by Fred E. Ahlert. In the song, the singer or protagonist expresses their feelings of pain and disappointment because the person they love is mean and hurtful to them. From the opening lyrics of the song, the singer sings, “You’re mean to me. Why must you be mean to me?” The singer desires to know why their partner can be so cruel to them. They go further to say that their partner seems to enjoy seeing them cry.

The singer goes on to highlight how their partner’s actions leave them feeling alone and sad. They admit that they stay home each night, waiting for their partner to call, but the call never comes. The singer is left alone, singing the blues, and sighing. Even when they are together, their partner treats them coldly, constantly scolding them whenever somebody is around, making them feel like it'd be exciting to be mean to them due to how their partner treats them regularly.

Overall, "Mean to Me" is a song that mirrors the pain and disappointment felt when someone we love treats us poorly. It's a lamentation on the agony of unrequited love, the feeling of worthlessness and the desire to make the relationship work despite the obstacles one faces. This song is a testament to the fact that love can oftentimes be painful, but it's not something we can escape because of its beauty.

Doris really worked it in this movie and should have at least have been nominated for an Oscar!

I think she was nominated for an Oscar for this. You know, in The Man Who Knew Too Much with James Stewart, directed by Hitchcock, Doris went to him and asked what she was doing wrong. Hitchcock wasn't telling her anything or directing her at all. His response to her...... he didn't need to direct her, she was doing everything right. One of the most underrated and under recognized actors ever.

I absolutely agree. I loved all Doris Day's performances equally until I saw Love Me or Leave Me. It was without a doubt, the best movie I had ever seen. Doris Day or no Doris Day. She is phenomenal in this picture. Thank you for watching.

I agree. Isn't she so beautiful in this film? Such lean muscle and curves in all the right balance. She must have been breathtaking in person. If only....

You and me both! But oh well. I know she is the greatest, Oscar or no oscar. Thank you for watching.
