Mood Índigo
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ain't never been blue; no, no, no,
You ain't never been blue,
Till you've had that mood indigo.
That feelin' goes stealin' down to my shoes
While I just sit here and sigh, "Go 'long blues".

I always get that mood indigo,
Since my baby said goodbye.
And in the evenin' when the lights are low,
I'm so lonely I could cry.
'Cause there's nobody who cares about me,
I'm just a poor fool that's bluer than blue can be.
When I get that mood indigo,
I could lay me down and die.

You ain't never been blue; no, no, no,
You ain't never been blue,
Till you've had that mood indigo.

That feelin' goes stealin' down to my shoes
While I just sit here and sigh, "Go 'long blues".

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Doris Day's song Mood Indigo reflect the despair and loneliness experienced by someone whose lover has left them. The title itself is a play on the word "blue," as the color is often associated with sadness and melancholy, but "indigo" also has a deeper meaning as a dark shade of blue that can evoke feelings of despair and hopelessness. The first verse establishes the idea that unless the listener has experienced this mood, they cannot truly understand its power. The singer then describes how the mood seeps into every aspect of their being, even down to their shoes, and how they feel as though it consumes them entirely.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's heartache, as they describe their loneliness and sense of being unloved. They feel as though they are stuck in a state of perpetual sorrow and cannot shake the feeling no matter how hard they try. They are so consumed by the mood that they feel as though they could die from the weight of their sadness. The chorus repeats, emphasizing that this mood is not just any kind of sadness, but something deeper and more all-encompassing.

Overall, Mood Indigo is a powerful representation of the emotional turmoil of heartbreak and loneliness. The vivid imagery and melancholic tone of the lyrics create a hauntingly beautiful portrayal of these complex emotions.

Doris has a velvet voice. After Les Brown period, she became a talented actress. Her voice will last for centuries.

One of the greats. I loved her in the sixties, when my mother would take me and my twin to see her movies. At 70, I'm no less impressed. This version of Ellington's Mood Indigo is as smooth as hot chocolate—just dreamy, if a bit sad. As always, every word is caressed, every note given its full value.
