Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

My Darling My Darling
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I′ve wanted to call you my darling
For many and many a day
My darling, my darling
I fluttered and fled like a starling
My courage just melted away
And there′s not a thing I'm sane enough to say
Except, my darling, my darling
Get used to the name of my darling
It's here to stay
′Till a moment ago, we were mister and miss
Discussing the weather, avoiding each others eye
′Till a moment ago, when we hadn't a kiss
And we kissed the mister and miss goodbye
Now at last, she can sigh
My darling, my darling
I′ve wanted to call you my darling
For many and many a day
My darling, my darling
I fluttered and fled like a starling
My courage just melted away
Now all at once, you've kissed me
And there′s not a thing I'm sane enough to say
Except, my darling, my darling
Get used to the name of my darling
It′s here to stay
These lyrics convey a sense of longing and hesitation in expressing one's true feelings towards another person. The line "My darling, my darling, I've wanted to call you my darling for many and many a day" suggests that the singer has been harboring deep affection for this person, possibly for an extended period of time. However, they have been hesitant to express their feelings openly.
The line "I fluttered and fled like a starling, my courage just melted away" reveals the singer's fear and uncertainty, comparing their actions to that of a bird that quickly flits away when frightened. This suggests that they have been unsure of how the other person would receive their emotions, causing their courage to falter.
The moment of clarity mentioned in the lyrics is when the other person finally kisses the singer. This kiss is a breakthrough for the singer, as it validates their feelings and confirms a mutual attraction. The line "And there's not a thing I'm sane enough to say" portrays the overwhelming surge of emotions that the singer experiences after this kiss, rendering them momentarily speechless.
The repetition of the phrase "my darling, my darling" throughout the song emphasizes the newfound joy and certainty the singer feels in the relationship. They urge the other person to "get used to the name of my darling" as a declaration that they are fully committed to this love and that it is here to stay. Overall, the lyrics tell a story of hesitancy and eventually finding the courage to express love, culminating in a deep sense of joy and commitment.

My darling, my darling
I have desired to address you as my beloved for a long time
I′ve wanted to call you my darling
I have yearned to express my deep affection for you
For many and many a day
Throughout an extended period of time
I fluttered and fled like a starling
I was nervous and evasive, like a startled bird
My courage just melted away
I lost all my bravery and confidence
Now all at once, you've kissed me
Suddenly, you embraced me with a tender kiss
And there's not a thing I'm sane enough to say
I am unable to think clearly or articulate my feelings
Except, my darling, my darling
However, my love, my beloved
Get used to the name of my darling
Become accustomed to being addressed as my beloved
It's here to stay
This affectionate term is permanent
′Till a moment ago, we were mister and miss
Until just a moment ago, we referred to each other formally
Discussing the weather, avoiding each others eye
Engaging in mundane small talk, deliberately avoiding eye contact
′Till a moment ago, when we hadn't a kiss
Until just a moment ago, we had not shared a kiss
And we kissed the mister and miss goodbye
And we bid farewell to the formalities of addressing each other
Now at last, she can sigh
Now finally, she can breathe a contented sigh
