People Will Say We
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't throw bouquets at me
Don't please my folks too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much
People will say we're in love

Don't sigh and gaze at me
Your sighs are so like mine
And your eyes mustn't glow like mine
People will say we're in love

Don't start collecting things
Give me my rose and my glove

Well, sweetheart, they're suspecting things
People will say we're in love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Doris Day's song "People Will Say We're in Love" reflect the uncertainty and hesitance of a new relationship. The singer is cautioning their partner not to be too obvious about their affection, as it will draw unwanted attention from those around them. The first verse urges their partner not to try too hard to impress their family or laugh at their jokes, as it will make them appear too enamored. The second verse similarly warns against gazing into each other's eyes or making their affection too obvious, as others will speculate about their romance. The final lines express fear that others are already starting to suspect something, indicating that the singer is aware that their love is beginning to show.

The lyrics illustrate the societal pressures that can exist when it comes to romance. The couple is aware that their actions will be scrutinized and judged by others, and they are hesitant to give too much away. This speaks to the idea that society often has strict rules and expectations when it comes to love, and going against these normative behaviors can lead to gossip and judgment.

Overall, the lyrics to "People Will Say We're in Love" convey a sense of apprehension and vulnerability when it comes to new relationships. The singer is aware of the potential judgment from those around them and is trying to avoid drawing attention to themselves. This sense of caution and uncertainty is a common experience in the early stages of a romance, as the individuals involved navigate the expectations of others while also trying to figure out their own feelings.

I read Tom Santopietro's - Considering Doris Day. He really reviews her whole career. Very interesting book. He puts forth a theory that Doris made everything appear very easy and natural and therefore she didn't really get the credit she so richly deserves .. because it wasn't easy ! I became a Doris fan at 10 when I started listening to my Mom's Doris Day records and I've been a fan ever since !!
