Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968β1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

The Christmas Song
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos
Everybody knows, a turkey and some mistletoe
Can help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
They know that Santa's on his way
With toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
The lyrics of Doris Day's "Christmas Song," also known as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire," are a heartwarming depiction of the traditional holiday season. The opening line immediately sets the scene of a cozy, winter evening with the image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, accompanied by the playful nip of Jack Frost on one's nose. The next line mentions Yuletide carols being sung by a choir, evoking visions of church and community gatherings during the holiday season. The third line brings to mind families and friends bundled up in warm clothing, donning sweaters and hats with the occasional individual dressed up in a playful, perhaps even a bit cheesy, Eskimo costume. The imagery of these lyrics further emphasizes the importance of togetherness, love, and warmth during a time of year commonly associated with joy and hope.
The second verse of the song emphasizes the excitement and anticipation felt by children during the holiday season. The mention of turkey and mistletoe as well as the use of the phrase "season bright," emphasizes the focus on happiness, warmth, and the appeal to the senses during the holidays. The mention of "tiny tots" with their eyes all aglow further emphasizes the magic and wonder of Christmas. The playful reference to spying on the reindeer, in order to see if they "really know how to fly," adds a touch of humor, perhaps gently poking fun at the naΓ―vete of children's beliefs. Ultimately, the song ends on a simple yet powerful note, wishing all individuals a Merry Christmas, from young to old. This sentiment powerfully encompasses the joy, hope, and love that characterize the holiday season.
