The Lady
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If there's a gleam in her eye
Each time she straightens your tie,
You know the lady's in love with you!
If she can dress for a date
Without that waiting you hate,
It means the lady's in love with you!

And when your friends ask you over to join their table,
But she picks that faraway booth for two,
Well sir, here's just how it stands,
You've got romance on your hands,
Because the lady's in love with you!

If you've been travellin' by 'plane
And she says, "Please take the train!",
You know the lady's in love with you!
And if she has met your old flames
And she remembers their names,
It means the lady's in love with you!

And Sunday night, when you take her to see that movie,
And she says the gallery seats will do,
Well, here's just how it stands,
You got romance on your hands,
'Cause the lady's in love with you!
The lady is me, and I'm in love with you!

So in love with you!
Je vous aime beaucoup!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Doris Day's song "The Lady in Love with You" speak of the different signs that indicate that a lady is in love with someone. The first verse talks about how the woman pays attention to her partner's appearance, particularly his tie, indicating her attraction towards him. The second verse mentions how the woman wants to look good for her partner, which means that she values his opinion and wants to impress him. The third verse talks about the woman's willingness to prioritize her partner's preferences over her own, such as taking the train instead of the plane or picking a separate booth for two instead of joining a bigger group. Lastly, the lyricist reveals that the lady in question is the singer herself and that she is in love with the person she is singing to.

The lyrics of the song have a lively and playful tone that matches the upbeat melody. Doris Day's smooth voice brings out the charm of the song and gives it a romantic and joyful feel. The song speaks of how even the small gestures of love, such as taking a train or remembering the names of old flames, can mean a great deal in a relationship.

With such an amazing talent Doris Day could have made a masterwork out of the phone directory if she had to sing it. Bing Crosby, after listening to DAY BY DAY and DAY BY NIGHT, ranked Doris high up on his "list" of favorite singers, next to Ella Fitzgerald. That says it all! What a tribute! Needless to say Doris Day deserves it....Thanks again, Dayniac.

I like this version. Tony Bennett did a great job on this song, but Doris sings it from the woman's point of view. Every man knows the thrill when a special lady suddenly takes an interest in him.
