Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

We’ll Be Together Again
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
remember the sun has shone
Laugh, and the world will laugh with you
Cry, and you'll cry alone
No tears, no fears
Remember, there's always tomorrow
So what if we have to part
Your kiss, your smile
are memories I'll treasure forever
so try thinking with your heart
We'll be together again
Times when I know you'll be lonesome
times when I know you'll be sad
don't let temptation surround you
don't let the blues make you bad
Some day, some way
we both have a lifetime before us
for parting is not goodbye
We'll be together again
In Doris Day's song "We'll Be Together Again", she comforts someone who is going through a tough time. The opening lines suggest that the person might be in a dark place, but she reminds them that things will get better, just like the sun shining after a storm. The next line, "Laugh, and the world will laugh with you/Cry, and you'll cry alone", is an old saying that means people tend to avoid those who are sad and gravitate towards those who are happy. She's encouraging the person to keep a positive attitude because that will lead to more happiness.
The chorus is optimistic and hopeful, reminding the person that they will see each other again even if they have to part. The memories of their time together, the kisses and the smiles, will be treasured forever. She advises them to follow their heart and keep a positive outlook because they will be reunited. She acknowledges that there will be times when the person will be sad and lonely, but urges them not to give in to temptation or let the blues bring them down. She reminds them that they have a lifetime ahead of them and that parting is not the end.
Overall, the song's message is about hope, love, and encouraging others to remain strong during difficult times. The lyrics are poignant and comforting, demonstrating Doris Day's undeniable talent for conveying emotion through her voice.

This is a marvellous song sung from the heart and with soulful meaning. It's had a profound effect on me and listening to all these wonderful performances from all these great singers including, of course, Doris Day and Frank Sinatra and the rest has made me feel as if I ought to give my own contribution and try to give of my very best. I've committed myself now and so I'm going to give my own interpretation of this great ballad. It's the very least I can do to honour it.
