Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

What Does a Woman Do
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Judging by me and you, she goes along, goes along
One of us has to choose, what's to be the game we play
So whether we win or lose, I'll go your way, your way
High on a river of nice, the stars go by
Lovely under the lights, go you and I
Only when I'm with you, I'm not alone
What does a woman do when her lover's hopes are dim?
Judging by me and you, she stays with him, she stays with him
In these lyrics, Doris Day explores the complexities of love and the sacrifices a woman may make when faced with a situation where the man she loves is in the wrong. The first verse suggests that when confronted with this dilemma, the woman tends to go along with the man despite knowing that he is not right. This may indicate her willingness to support her partner and prioritize his happiness over her own.
The second verse presents a decision that needs to be made by one of them, implying that a choice must be made regarding the direction of their relationship. Whether they win or lose, the woman expresses her commitment to go along with the man's choice and support him. This highlights her loyalty and willingness to stand by her partner's side, regardless of the outcome.
The following lines take a more positive tone, describing a beautiful scene where the couple is in harmony. The imagery of a river and stars passing by creates a serene and romantic atmosphere. Doris Day sings of being lovely under the lights, reflecting the joy and contentment she experiences when she and her lover are together. This emphasizes the strength of their connection and the happiness they find in each other's company.
The final verse delves into the complex nature of love and loyalty. When the man's hopes seem dim, the woman, drawing from her own experience, chooses to stay with him. This suggests that she is willing to weather the difficult times and support her partner through thick and thin. It demonstrates her unwavering commitment and dedication to the relationship, even when faced with uncertainty or challenges.
Overall, these lyrics depict a woman's willingness to go along with her lover's choices, remaining steadfast and supportive through both the good and the bad. They showcase the sacrifices and loyalty she exhibits in the name of love, even when confronted with difficult decisions or compromising situations.
