While the Music Plays On
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Each night in some cafe
I'm on display until the dark turns into dawn
Up upon the stand, singing with the band
While the music plays on

Each night is just a long
And endless song until the last couple has gone
Then only I must start singing out my heart
While the music plays on

Oh, what madness to discover
Music still possesses all its charms
As I serenade my lover
Dancing by in someone else's arms

But I am not allowed to show the crowd
What happens when romance has gone
I must hide my feels singing through the tears
While the music plays on

Oh, what madness to discover
Music still possesses all of its charms
As I serenade my lover
Dancing by in someone else's arms

But I am not allowed to show the crowd
What happens when romance has gone

I must hide my feels singing through the tears
While the music plays on

Overall Meaning

Doris Day's song 'While the Music Plays On' talks about the life of a singer who performs each night in a cafe under the scrutiny of the audience. The song emphasizes the performer's difficult task of hiding emotions and singing through tears, even when the heart is breaking, as their personal life is relegated backstage. The singer explains that each night is a long and endless song until the last couple has gone.

The lyrics suggest that the singer's personal life is far from being perfect as they watch couples dancing by in someone else's arms. The performer cannot express their true feelings and must continue singing while the music plays on. The music, as the lyrics suggest, continues to possess all its charms, and the singer must hide their emotions while performing onstage.

Trombonology Erstwhile

I love this dramatic side from Doris' first stint with Les' orchestra. This band singer's lament always seems to me to be a kind of adaptation of Rodgers & Hart's "Ten Cents A Dance," in which a dime-a-dance girl expresses similar professional woes. Doris' "... dancing by in someone else's arms" is wonderfully poignant; beautiful reeds after her vocal, too.

I love Doris and Les Brown's song production. Doris was just 19 years old at the time she recorded this. Beautiful Les Brown orchestration. As a singer myself, I would love to bring back some of the great songs like this one. Young folks today don't know what they are missing.

Great lyrics, and tune, great orchestration too, and, of course. rendered by a superb vocalist.
Thank you for sharing.
