Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I had to lock my door,
Somehow I couldn't warm up
To one before.
What was it that controlled me?
What kept my love-life lean?
My intuition told me
You'd come on the scene.
And you'll get just what I mean.
Embrace me,
My sweet embraceable you.
Embrace me,
You irreplaceable you.
Just one look at you - my heart grew tipsy in me.
You and you alone bring out the gypsy in me.
I love all
The many charms about you;
Above all,
I want my arms about you.
Don't be a naughty baby,
Come to papa - come to papa - do!
My sweet embraceable you.
I love all
The many charms about you;
Above all,
I want my arms about you.
Don't be a naughty baby,
Come to papa - come to papa - do!
My sweet embraceable you.
In this song, "You," Doris Day confesses that she has been hesitant to commit to any one person until the arrival of the person she addresses in the lyrics. She alludes to her intuition telling her that the person she has been waiting for is finally on the scene. However, this is not the complete meaning of the song, and it is much more significant when you take the lyrics in the broader context of love.
Day's voice and delivery on this song are beautiful and memorable, full of longing, intrigue, and passion. The opening lines of the song are about how Doris Day's character had to lock her door to keep the hordes of suitors at bay. But then, she goes on to question why she was never drawn to any of them. It is as if she was waiting on someone specific to show up in her life.
The chorus of the song, where Day asks to be embraced by the person who she was waiting for, is filled with emotion and longing. She goes on to describe the charms of this person and how their presence is enough to bring out the gypsy in her. Overall, "You" is a song about the power of love, the pull of attraction, and the emotional force that brings people together.

I'm 19 years old and I can honestly say Doris day amongst some other beauties is one of my biggest idols. She was effortlessly beautiful and just watching her in films brings a smile to my face. Such a woman.

This is beyond wonderful! Two amazing voices, a motion picture that was incapable of ever being forgotten, Gratitude to you for bringing back such special memories. We have lived during the right time to love music like these two incredible artists gave us .To hear it again brings very strong emotions. I met Frank at the Sands years ago... it was the thrill of a lifetime. No one will ever equal his talent. And singing with Doris makes this song perfection.
