The first roots of the band may be found in Mad Madam, which was a cover band with a set list full of songs from Seattle groups. Kaan Tangöze and Ari Barokas were together in Mad Madam until Tangöze flew to Seattle to earn a graduate degree. Upon returning to Turkiye with a handful of songs molded in the spirit of the Seattle scene, Tangöze formed Duman with Ari Barokas from his former group and Batuhan Mutlugil from another local cover band. After first deciding to work with session drummers, drummer Alen Konakoğlu took on this responsibility and the group released Eski Köprünün Altında in 1999.

Ötekisi doksanbeş
Aga böyle olmaz ki
Koca millet harcanmaz ki vay
Biri arap tayfası
Ötekisi gavur mandası
Aga böyle olmaz ki
Biri sağdan
Biri soldan asılınca
Biri yasaya
Biri kasaya karışınca
Evvel zaman içinde masal olduk
Masal olduk yine
The lyrics to Duman's song Masal depict a situation where two groups or individuals are at odds with each other, each claiming to be right in their own way. The first two lines describe two different numbers, 80 and 95, which could symbolize two conflicting ideologies, beliefs or opinions. The singer seems to be frustrated with the situation and remarks that this is not how things should be. The next two lines describe the two groups as Arab and non-Arab, possibly referring to the long-standing tensions between Arab and non-Arab countries in the Middle East.
The phrase 'aga böyle olmaz ki' ('this can't be right') is repeated twice in the chorus, emphasizing the singer's disbelief that such division and conflict exists. The following lines describe a situation where there is chaos and confusion, with one group going to the right and the other to the left, and one getting involved with the law while the other deals with money. However, despite the conflicts and differences, the last line of the chorus repeats the line 'we became a fairy tale', suggesting that this division is something that has existed for a long time and may even be a part of the culture or folklore.
Overall, the song Masal seems to be a commentary on the various divisions and conflicts that exist in society, and the frustration that comes with it. The repeated line 'aga böyle olmaz ki' acts as a plea for unity and understanding, highlighting the need for people to look beyond their differences and come together.
