Make Me Smile
Duran Duran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've done it all, you've broken every code
And pulled the Rebel to the floor
You spoilt the game, no matter what you say
For only metal-what a bore!
Blue eyes, blue eyes, how can you tell so many lies?

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild

There's nothing left, all gone and run away
Maybe you'll tarry for a while
It's just a test, a game for us to play
Win or lose, it's hard to smile
Resist, resist, it's from yourself you have to hide.

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild

There ain't no more, you've taken everything
From my belief in Mother Earth
How can you ignore my faith in everything

When I know what faith is and what it's worth
Away, away, and don't say maybe you'll try.

Overall Meaning

The song Make Me Smile by Duran Duran is a plea from a person to their lover who has manipulated and betrayed them in many ways. The lyrics speak about how the lover has done everything they could to break every code, and even brought the rebel down to their knees. They have cheated and played games, ignoring the singer's belief in the world and faith in everything. The singer knows that their lover frequently lies, but it's tough to resist their charms and not give in. It's like a game for the couple, whoever wins or loses, it's still hard to smile. The more the lover lies and cheats, the harder it becomes to conceal those emotions, yet the singer cannot resist them.

The chorus of the song, "Come up and see me, make me smile or do what you want, running wild" shows that the singer is yearning for their lover's attention and affection. Even though they know that their lover has hurt them, they can't help but hope that their lover comes back to them and makes them smile or do whatever they want, running wild. They are unsure if their lover will try and win back their trust again or if they will leave the relationship for good.

Overall, the song showcases the vulnerability and pain that comes with loving someone who doesn't reciprocate those feelings. The singer feels like they have lost everything and that their lover has taken everything away from them. Yet, they still can't resist the temptation and allure of their partner.

Resist, resist
It's from yourself, you have to hide, oh
Come up and see me to make me smile, oh
Or do what you want, running wild
There ain't no more, you've taken everything
From my belief in Mother Earth
Can you ignore my faith in everything
'Cause I know what faith is and what it's worth
Away, away
And don't say maybe you'll try
To come up and see me to make me smile
Or do what you want just running wild
Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild
Come up and see me

Still gives me goosebumps after all these years! I always wished they had done a studio version of this.

@Aino Bredtved Same here. There is no studio recording of this. The opportune time for them to do it, I thought, was when they recorded the covers album "Thank You" or include on one of their hits compilations. That's what the Bee Gees did. Songs they had written for others like "Heartbreaker" and "Islands In The Stream".

Omg!!! I remember holding my little cassette tape recorder up to my mom/dad's tv in the 80's & recording this. You know, with the orange record button. 😂 I was like 12, I'm now 45 . Still in love with JT.
