If I Had a Child
Dusted Lyrics

What a child it would be
Never have to bathe
Have sweets every meal
Wear their favorite clothes everyday
And go to bed when they want to
Have jelly beans for breakfast
If I had a child
What a child it would be
To see them play in the flower's shade
Pick apples off the trees
If I had a child
It would be the child God made
The song "If I Had a Child" by Dusted speaks about the wonderful world we could create for a child if we were able to raise them in a world where they don't have to face difficult realities. The song is a childlike reflection on how simple and free life would be if we could raise a child without discipline or structure, and instead, let them live a life of innocence and happiness.
The lyrics suggest that if the songwriter was able to have a child, the child would not have any responsibilities, such as bathing or going to bed at a certain time. Instead, the child would be free to do whatever they want, wear their favorite clothes daily, eat sweets for every meal, and run around wherever they please. The lyrics paint a picture of a simple and carefree life, where the child's only concern is to play in the flowers and enjoy the natural world around them.
The song suggests that the parent would want to create a world for the child where they could pick apples off the trees and enjoy the sweet pleasures of nature. However, the lyrics also suggest that this idyllic world is only possible in our imagination. The ending line of the song suggests that ultimately, the child we have is the child that God made, and we must accept them for who they are.
Overall, the song speaks about a longing for a world where childhood is carefree and happy, free from the difficulties and harshness of reality. It's a song that speaks to our inner child, reminding us of the innocent and simple pleasures that we sometimes forget as grown-ups.
