Although its influences range from bands such as Tool and King Crimson, to Nine Inch Nails and Porcupine Tree, this versatile group of musicians has worked hard to develop a sound that often strives to elude categorization and gives the music a distinctive place in the local scene. Eye includes Mehdi Gr on lead guitar, Gorgin Asadi on the keys, Kaveh Kashani plays the bass, Sasan Sam occupies the spot behind the drum kit, while visuals are dexterously put together by Sami Al-Turki. Bojan Preradovic handles vocals and occasional rhythm guitar duties.
Eye’s music is very much of a western progressive rock variety, even as the very soul of its intricacies is rooted in a restless and volatile Middle East.The visual elements are highly conceptual and are based on the band’s own reactions to the world – material and abstract. Both the song lyrics and live visuals, which are featured in every live performance, are intended to demonstrate the gap between an individual and his or her comfort zone in society. Definitely a very informative video. Based on how you describe it it feels like VR isn't going to be what I feared it to be where it's just a really close screen to your face. Can't wait to get my first VR device so I can see exactly how they design the optics so it doesn't feel like you have a screen right up to your eyeball. I also had a question about a condition of one of my eyes. Until recently I couldn't figure out the best way to describe it but my right eye doesn't seem to focus, I could basically compare it to peripheral vision. You know how you look at an object and everything around it gets blurry sort of, well my right eye has this everywhere. Can't read out of it or anything.

@Dr. EyeGuy it's been like that my whole life. Still nit sure I'm describing the issue properly however, it's the best form of analogy I could think of to fit the issue. Eye exams in the past just seem to chalk it up to a severe stigmatism or astigmatism, I'm not sure the right word but the curvature of the pupil i think is what it refers to.

My Quest 2 has helped my vision. After a few months of ownership my lazy eye went away. At first I had a hard time focusing in VR, once I trained myself how to focus on VR it carried over to real life too.

Great question. It would depend on what was causing the double vision. If it's a muscle imbalance that can be improved through vision therapy... then in theory VR could be used to help with that. VR and vision therapy is still in it's early stages though... still a lot more work to be done.

Ive been using VR for a while now, and sometimes it feels like it improves my vision...and sometimes it seems to do the opposite.
I think it may improve vision because its forcing the brain to render the world in 3D....where as looking and a phone is not engaging the brains 3D vision. I have noticed that VR quite often creates odd optical illusions that can last for hours.

Fantastic vids on VR use! I have Graves and had orbital decompressions, eye muscles surgeries (many!), due to diplopia and torsion, dry eyes (forever due to GD) eyelid retraction surgeries and already had glasses before. Had to wear fresnel lenses/prisms and finally the University of MN was able to fix these dang eyeballs and get them as close to 100 as possible. Long story for short point - after all these surgeries I am able to do VR quite well and absolutely love it!!!! I was concerned about possibility of undoing the surgeries. You have allayed the concerns as I do take breaks and already use eye drops. Just would add pro tip of making sure you are hydrated. Odd affect of being dehydrated (which most people don’t drink enough fluids) is dry eyes. Eye drops can only do so much for surface dryness if you are dehydrated. Anyway, great videos and you have a new sub here!

Thanks for the video about VR and our eyes. I always wondered what a Doctor thinks of VR devices. I always use mine for short periods of time and use it for SIM racing. These racing games are fun in VR but do put some strain on your eyes with the fast paced VR action racing around the tracks. I know some of my friend racers do this hours on end, so dont know how it will affect their eyes later down the line. take care.

Talking of accomidation and vergence, I use to notice when viewing magic eye images for any length of time would really screw my vision up. I should probably test to see if it is worse for divergent types (most commonly found) vs cross-eyed, but assuming it more about the close distance and asking your eyes to combine this with very strange vergence this is more likely, I seem to be ok with VR!

Also, I've tried shifting towards listening to most videos more than actually watching them to reduce eye strain as well. You mentioned how we tend not to blink as much with screens, thats something I never really noticed and thought about, but now that I am thinking about it, I am realizing that I rarely blink at all when im looking at a screen. Maybe something that could help with that is breaks, and maybe trying to blink more often while your looking at a screen. Good info
I use the Quest 2 a LOT and I've been noticing that my eyes seem to be more painful after I use it. I play this shooter game called Pavlov, and I usually have to close my right eye a lot to aim. During the days I don't use VR, I don't really notice problems with my eyes. But the days I do, I can almost always remember having a small period of time where they hurt.

eyedrops are your friends with the Quest, even with taking regular breaks. I just have to make a conscious effort myself. Blink a few times, close the eyes for half a second and wiggle the eyes around under the lids, then blink a few more times...

My right eye used to be a little blurry. I always used to think my left was just sharp because of the sports i played and how much i used my left eye, but as i've gotten older, my right eye has definitely become somewhat blurry unless i try really hard to focus it while my left eye is closed. Got my quest 2 around christmas time and have logged a couple dozen hours in and i've noticed that my right ey is starting to see clearer without having to work as hard to focus. Interesting to know that there could be something going on behind it.

As a side note for if it's related, it seems like my ipd is within a fraction of a mm of perfect for one of the settings.

@Dr. EyeGuy didn't pay enough attention to it before to notice for sure if it was worse at close, mid, or long range, but if I had to guess I'd say yes - all of the above. Whenever I close my left eye, it feels noticeably easier to resolve the image with my right regardless of what I'm looking at. Not sure if i had issues with far objects before but definitely had small issues with the right eye for things inside 15 ish feet. I could resolve the image, but it took about as much effort as it takes to actively blur your vision.

Feels like it takes 90% less effort to resolve the image perfectly. Sometimes the image is already resolved as soon as I open my right eye

I actually keep a bottle of eye drops in the case with my Quest 2, and always keep the brightness low with blue light filter on on pretty much all my devices, and my vision is gucci 👍
Something I would warn is looking down the bottom of the Quest 2, if you use one you know what I mean, that little gap around your nose; I realized looking down there so much was giving me eye strain pretty bad, so if you've gotta look outside of the headset just lift it up and save yourself some pain

I just got a oculus quest 2 2 days ago and this will help me keep track. I do notice that I don't blink as much when playing a horror VR game. My brain just thinks,if u blink,you're gonna get killed. But for some reason with subnautica VR,I blink normally. I think seeing a bunch of water is making my brain think to blink more.

Super weird and random question that I'm curious about. I am super far sighted (+4.5 in both eyes) and I have noticed that I can actually take my glasses off and see just fine in VR. This might not seem like a big deal to people whose glasses come off and on all the time, but with my vision, I cannot function in life without some kind of correction -- so being able to take my glasses off and not even notice in VR is absolutely fascinating. I did some googling, but I am not sure how common that is, or really why its so easy for me to see in VR, but maybe you know!

It must help that VR is set for more distance, so you don't need to try and focus on something really close like in real life. Do you get headaches though? After playing for a while. I would think you would still have to have to focus while playing without glasses.

I have a quest 2 and it’s my first headset ever, I also have a negative prescription. I’m not sure how to describe how bad it is but my eye doctor says I’m legally blind once I’m 22. I haven’t seen any noticeable difference when I got the headset, my eyesight is still just getting worse to the second as usual. Apparently it’s because of my mother’s terrible prescription, so I guess my eyes are still slightly adjusting to hers. My glasses also have a blue light filter, so I use them a lot. Eventually I will have to wear my glasses all the time except sleeping (or contacts)

Good educated info giving some insights to people curious about VR. I have a question. Out of the current mainstream VR systems available to consumers, do you feel that one is a lot better for your eyes then others based on the tech/lenses they use? There are a quite a few available now so I am just wondering if the more expensive versions actually make a difference? Thanks.

variable IPD adjustment over the Quest's 'snaps' is a definite improvement... howeeeveer, with some finessing, it's possible to make the Q2 sit in between settings and this works fine. It's also worth noting that the Quest 2's heat exhaust (near the top strap) leaks into the facial interface and is hell with my contact lens. That said, they're all in the same ballpark far as I can tell. There is however quite a bit of newer tech down the pipeline that should make them both nicer and safer to use.

Excellent question! I'm not sure I could answer if one is better for the eyes. VR systems will have different lens design, and maybe more accurate PD adjustments, that could reduce blur and maybe eye strain as well. As far as one being less risky or less damaging.. not necessarily. But I like this question so much I'm going to look into it and research it further. Thanks for the awesome question.

I’ve had very bad eyesight since first started using my quest 2, I could see crystally for miles and miles. Now I can’t see 25 inches in front of me.
I guess this is because i have a close range focusing problem, and VR stimulated something with it.

After a bit more “searching” it’s probably not actually the oculus at all, I bet it’s the increased use of technology since lockdown... ignore the first 2 comments, I was just making random assumptions I think. (By the way, what I meant by close range focusing problems is, if you focus on your finger while you slowly move it to your nose, my left eye veers off and I start to lose focus. This is only when it’s really really close though.)

My optometrist is skeptical about heat being delivered to the glands on the upper eyelids when you open your eyes as opposed to say, a wheatbag on closed eyelids directly where the glands are. How many times a day do you use yours?

I use the Q2 maybe 4 to 5 times a week /an hour each time just for cardio and workouts. I rarely watch TV or movies on the VR. I do take them off every 10 to 15mins when I sweat to wipe them clean. What are the chances my eyes are getting damaged coz I can't figure if I am blinking well during the game time. Would appreciate an advise on this. Thanks

@Dr. EyeGuy no, not that the pics are creepy. The concept, that they degrade. I'm scared of the concept that my glans could degrade to such an extent that my eyes would be irritated 24/7. Like chronic condition, simular to chronic back pain.

In terms of how they look... Well... I'd say one eye is okay, and the other eye is pretty bad. At least I can see the glans on the right eye. On the left eye I couldn't destinguish them. And the left eye is the one that feels the most dry.

one thing that trips me out in VR is in DCS flight sim when i look into a mirror my left eye is weaker and has trouble focusing on it but when i look to the right my left eye has no trouble focusing on that mirror lol wack on a side note when I was a kid I went to this reading doctor yes that's a thing bc my eyes would go back to the same line i just read not the one below it and id have to consciously move my eyes down almost like fighting myself lol so he taught me how to cross my eyes and stuff and that actually helped so in reality being able to manipulate your eyes individually is a good thing. nothing to worry about.

I noticed after using it that my vision improved while having the headphones off but I only used it for a couple of weeks.

I can definitely see living a big portion of my life behind the lenses so I hope it’s not damaging.

I mean, within the first 16 seconds you got eye strain visibly going on in your eyes. Might be an indicator of bad for your eyes but that goes for all tech. It is so distracting it's straining.

Dammit! My eye strain is definitely from Vergence Accomadation Conflict. Which im guessing is also causing the other symptoms. This always happened during 3D movies as well. Things always looked blurry and i think my eyes are auto squinting not with my lids but with my actual eye it like tenses up trying to focus on the objects or screen . I notice i do that when my glasses are off and im trying to just use my phone real quick it feels like im poppin my eye out more. The only thing that we can do is take breaks ?... hoping they come out with those better lenses soon haha

They are absolutely working on this! There are patents from almost every major VR hardware company that explain some advanced optics that match convergence and accomodation using active lenses and eye tracking.

I've been researching this..at least if there is a way to help the eyes. There is vision therapy that can help, but that is usually done at an eye doctors office and can sometimes be costly. You could try completely relaxing your eyes as best your can, almost as if you are zoning out for the first minute or 2 in VR and see if that helps. I'll keep researching and see if something else comes up.

I got a Quest 2 for Christmas, and recently I’ve been experiencing an eye twitch under the eye, it happens to both but I think the right more so than the left. I haven’t played in 2-4 days and the problem doesn’t seem to be as bad as it did, however it’s still there. I do have astigmatism, and I’ve been wearing my headset without my glasses because they don’t fit great, have you heard of this issue and would you happen to have any advice? Thanks for any help!

hey, im just experiencing exactly the same issue, bought quest 1 month ago, used for it 2 weeks and since then im having a twitch in my left eye that doesnt want to disappear.
Didnt touched my quest for the last 2 weeks hoping this issue would disappear by itself, but its getting even worse. I think im going to a doctor who knows... If im honest im a bit concerned. Its good to know that you're not alone, much love from Barcelona. Please let me know if you get better

Quick question about the Vergence-Accommodation Conflict: does this same effect apply to those of us who wear glasses? I'm no doctor but it strikes me as though they would have similar effects in that you use an object close to your eyes to see far off other objects.

Right... it's interested how VR works. The lenses in VR change the light rays... making them look like they are coming from 4 feet away. So by the time the light rays hit our eyes, our eyes register that they need to focus on something 4 feet away. Kind of interesting.

I find it surprising the eye apparently both is and isn't fooled by it. ("is" because we do perceive something far off that actually is not, "isn't" because it apparently causes the eyes to readjust for it despite the perception)

No, because in the real world the distance you are looking at matches the focal point. So if you look at your hand through your glasses, your eyes will converge and accommodate to see the closer target to make it clear, even if you are wearing glasses.

Do you think there is any effect on the eye areas/sinuses from wearing a VR headset? It is known to cause that red line on our faces - do you think the wearing of a headset has a physical negative effect on our eyes/ENT aside from just how it affects our eyes directly?

not if you have the headset tightened correctly I don't think (at least no worse then ski-goggles would). MOST of the weight has to be on the upper strap, the side straps should be juuuuuust tight enough to keep the thing from flopping around. doing that (provided you're not also allergic to the facepad, some folks are) and you shouldn't have red-marks. I do tighten it a bit if I'm going to be doing something athletic, and that's about the only time I'll get red marks.

That is an excellent question. I know it doesn't have an effect on intraocular eye pressure. But a far as how it may affect sinuses... I'm not sure. I'll keep my eyes open about this question. Thank you.

I Like the 20/20 rule but for me Its more Like a Loading Screen or Safe Zone / 20 rule :)

and I suggest everyone just consciously blink every now and then (for example after a beat saber level) (this helped me a lot)

Hi Doc! I’m 60 and freekin love my VR especially for exercise. But I have vitreous body detachment going on and developed a horseshoe tear that I had to have laser repaired today. I play a lot of walkabout golf and Supernatural (a beat saberish fitness app). Do you think the Oculus contributed to the tear, or could it be my almost simultaneous attempt at learning real world Golf and trying to get my swing together? Who knows, right!? Wondering what your thoughts would be?

First off, awesome that you are active with VR. Sorry to hear about the horseshoe tear... and you're right, hard to say what contributed to it. I had a patient that spent a summer fishing 3 days a week, and at the end of the summer developed a retinal detachment. He asked me if his fishing caused the retinal detachment, or would it have happened just by doing his normal activities. Hard to say, but he didn't give up fishing after that.

About the blue eye problem. The quest and others actually have a night mode where it releases the blue light on your eyes.

Hey, Im 24 and i have a lazy eye. Do you have a video or more info about the potential game based treatment for it? or is it just for kids?
Otherwise great video! One thing is that VR actually helps me sleep haha. I play 40-50min right when i want to sleep and wasn't able to. Not sure why could that be but my eyes do feel very tired after using it. I follow 20/20/20 now. I have been doing for 40min max season for 2 times max a day.

I have actually heard from a few people that VR helps them sleep... go figure. As far as the game, I'm actually looking into and researching that right now. There are a few programs that you work with your eye doctor. I'll get back to you when I know more.

Another thing is to make sure the face cushion isn’t pulling your cheeks down. This prevents your eyes from blinking correctly. I’m pretty sure you said this in another video! 🙂

Well weird thing is my dad in his 70's says if he uses a phone for 2 minutes his eyes go blurry and double vision but he can use VR for hours with no problems. He loves it actually, me too!

There are a couple of main ones that go over VR and Blink rate. More studies are needed in my opinion. I'm actually curious how the blink rate in VR compares to the blink rate when looking at a computer screen or phone. Here a couple of studies though.

I have nystagmus, optic nerve hypoplasia and astigmatism and was worried that I wouldn't be able to use vr. I was pleasantly surprised that I can use it without much issues. I love your channel btw, keep up good work.

Hi! There a few programs and VR apps that have been made for Vision Therapy or Binocular Training. Vivid Vision Home is one you could check out. The ones that I have seen usually work in conjunction with your eye doctor... meaning your eye doctor has to "prescribe" the program to you and have follow up visits to test for it's efficacy. I think it's still a fairly new way of vision therapy so there really isn't a lot of offices that have it as an option yet.

I was recently diagnosed with glaucoma in both eyes and epi-retinal membrance in the right eye. This was discovered coincidentally when I visited the doctor for another problem. They seem to be in an early stage, no symptoms. But the pressure in the eyes is high at 25. I use VR for work daily. Do I have a problem?

It has foveated rendering that will project an image much closer to what the eyes see in reality - focus shifts the same way for close and distant objects. I will surely take breaks more often and turn down brightness. Very much appreciate your advice.

This is a tricky one. Just because VR is still relatively new as far as the research world goes. I wouldn't think VR is contributing, but I would still be on the safe side. Close follow up care with your eye doc, if you have to use the VR, make sure you can take breaks often. Turn down screen brightness.

So when I first got my VR I set default to night light which lessens the amount of blue light that is displayed on screen, I've played every day since then, the same games and everything and I remembered that I left it on so I turned it off for a few days and let me say, I got about 20x dizzy faster than without the night light so, in conclusion use the night light!!!!

Anyone run into issues with the retina issues? Started using VR about a year ago for maybe 1-3 hours a day. My retina tore and have had 3 retinal re-attachment surgeries and gained about 5% of my vision back. Not sure VR had anything to do with it but wanted to throw it out there.

@Dr. EyeGuy Every eye doctor I talked to said it wouldn't harm it. Maybe it was just coincidence. I started playing again with blue light filter and blue light glasses on just to be safe. So in your opinion you don't think the technology lends itself to possible retinal damage?

Is it normal to feel 'drunk' after screen time? I always feel like I am a bit numb to touch and have weird buzzy feeling in my head after using my phone or tablet for 10-30 minutes. I wondered what could cause this and if i should be worried.

I like the oculus quest having a shorter battery time because it forces me to take breaks every couple hours if I’m not doing so at shorter intervals.

My Dad n I use VR no problem for either of us. I have good eye Gene's I suspect. I do a couple of extreme sports. One requires I see very far away aswell as at about 10 meters when downhilling.

What about glaucoma? My eye pressure has been fine my entire life, but 1 year after I started using vr excessively, my pressure is sky high to the point I need drops. However, I also just turned 50 so it could just be age.

If you have the VR headset adjusted correctly, than I don't see how it could be linked to eye pressure. And I haven't seen any links or studies to link it either. But VR is still fairly new... hard to say if something will be discovered about it in the future.

hello! i bought the blue light inserts and they worked wonderfully the first time! but after the first time i did experience quite a bit of eye strain after playing for less time than before, is anyone else having the same problem?

If they're not changing the colour, it's just placebo effect (They're blocking wavelengths that your headset doesn't make anyway)

I have about 4,000 hours in vr. I haven’t experienced anything except my reflexes actually improving and being able to notice things easier out of the corner of my eye. I have only had improvement with things and haven’t had any negative side effects using vr.

i use computers to much and my eyes never get dry but I blink a lot when I'm not in full competitive mode and with my friends. also I usually am far from my screen and the screen is big so I don't have to bad vision but I do have glasses.

Had PRK not that long ago, took a break from VR for a month before and didn't try it again until I was given the green light to resume full activity from my eye doctor. I don't know if there is a chance of damage with using VR during that time but I wasn't taking the risk. I do think your body does a good job of telling you to take a break when using VR and I try to listen to it.

@Dr. EyeGuy I heard it should, it's better now than it was months back. I will say for anyone thinking about it the first few weeks are a royal pain. Right after your eyes are almost perfect but very sensitive to light, then on day 3 - 4 your eyes will water like crazy and day 5 the contacts come out and it's comfortable. However, my eyes constantly shifted for at least 2 to 3 weeks after where looking at a computer monitor was very difficult and reading glasses didn't help due to the constant shifting. At one point I could only see things well at like 20 feet, even my 55 inch TV was too blurry from like 6 feet away. My eyes would be perfect one day and then back to garbage the next.

@Dr. EyeGuy had terrible eyesight, now better than 20/20 however I do have a bit of dry eye now (it's been about 5 months now). When I wake up I massage each eye for 10 seconds or so which helps. If I don't do that every once in a while as soon as I open my eyes it will feel like getting poked in them. Perfect beyond that though.

Is there any difference between OLED and LCD as far as eye strain? My wife and I can play PSVR for hours but she can't do the Quest for more then 15 minutes before the eye strain bothers her. I can go the length of the Quest2's battery but I do feel it myself.

@Dr. EyeGuy I am a mechanical engineer, decided to switch to IT. At first I did YT evangelisation videos back in 2013/2014. 2015 made my first Oculus GameJam from GalaxyNote4 and them after work I've learnt all I could find and eventually after long 6 years I did a game idea myself. The app is still around with a trailer. Now I'm not a superb programmer and take longer to learn but work as an Business analyst, which knows what the team does etc ;) If I did it...everyone can, just need time :D

Yes, what studies would you like referenced, and I can put them in the video description as well. There are studies related to screen time, computer vision syndrome that relate to staring at screens that can include VR. Optically the focal point of VR is farther then phones or tablets, but are you asking if having the screen that close to your eyes is dangerous in some other way, other than optically?

I have light sensitivity issues, sometimes they even affect my sinuses and I end up with a runny nose for days on end. (which, my Oculus sits ON my sinuses which doesn't help) I have to lay in bed or something longer for a day or so, to get a clear nose again... I use bluelight filters on everything. I also dimmed the brightness of the Oculus 2, which I think helped greatly. I just got mine 3 days ago and I've spent probably 17 hours in it so far. Lol. Thank you for the amazing video. 22k subs is a criminal imbellishment.

I can relate to this, mine's set almost as dark as it can go. Those screens are INSANELY bright and they don't really need to be. My phone is also near the low end most of the time. (made me think about it and I turned the backlight on the TV/monitor too. thanks for that)
