Misery
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Well, I've walked this street before
And everyone's locked up their door
'Cos they heard me coming
And I've been running
From what
I don't know if she's there
Or if she's cares
You've got a goldfish memory
This song's for you, not for me
In misery
You said we went too fast
And you said we wouldn't last
Now I've put the past behind me
And I'm running
From what
I don't know if she's there
Or if she cares
It's taken you a long time to see
You've got a goldfish memory
This song's for you, not for me
In misery
It's taken you a long time to see
In misery
And everyone's locked up their door
'Cos they heard me coming
And I've been running
From what
I don't know if she's there
Or if she's cares
It's taken you a long time to see
You've got a goldfish memory
This song's for you, not for me
In misery
You said we went too fast
And you said we wouldn't last
Now I've put the past behind me
And I'm running
From what
I don't know if she's there
Or if she cares
It's taken you a long time to see
You've got a goldfish memory
This song's for you, not for me
In misery
It's taken you a long time to see
In misery
"Misery" by Ed Sheeran delves into the feelings of frustration and disappointment one experiences in a troubled relationship. The lyrics describe a familiar street where the singer has traversed before, but this time they perceive that everyone has locked their doors upon their arrival. This symbolizes the awareness that their presence brings negativity and conflict due to past experiences. The singer feels as though they have been constantly running away from an ambiguous source of pain, unsure if their partner is present or even cares about their distress. The repetition of this idea emphasizes the prolonged uncertainty and confusion the singer has been enduring.
The lyrics also touch upon the concept of memory, describing the partner as having a "goldfish memory." This could be interpreted as a metaphor for their partner's forgetfulness or disinterest in the problems that have arisen in their relationship. The singer addresses their frustration with the partner's lack of recognition and understanding. They highlight that the song is written for the partner's benefit, to make them realize the impact of their actions, rather than expressing their own personal emotions.
The singer mentions that the partner claimed they had rushed into the relationship and predicted an eventual failure. However, the singer has managed to move on from the past and leave it behind them. They express their determination to continue running away from the uncertain future and the pain that might come with it. This reflects a mixture of both resilience and a desire to escape the cycle of misery they have found themselves in.
Overall, the lyrics convey the singer's frustrations with their partner's disregard for their emotions. They depict a cycle of running away and being met with closed doors, illustrating the ongoing struggle and lack of resolution in the relationship. The song highlights the singer's resilience as they choose to move on, despite the partner's lack of acknowledgment.
