Moving
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is the last song I'm writin' 'bout you
Up to now, well, I'd never tried to
You don't feel any kind of pain like I do
So let's forget it even happened, babe
You're all I thought about whenever I woke
And all I'd talk about whenever I spoke
All I'd sing when I would hit the high notes
But now it doesn't even matter

If you come back
It's like we never even had that
Every moment when you took my joy away
All the memories mean nothin' from today
Up to now I never hold back
True emotion make me feel sad
But I never wanna hear your name again
And go back to how it was before you came

Start movin' on, movin' on
I feel on a roll since you've been gone
Start movin' on, movin' on
Out of my life, life
Where you belong

This is the last time I'm thinkin' 'bout you
I used to cry but then was it a crime to?
I spent a lifetime tryna make the right moves
And got myself caught in a pattern, babe
You take a smile and then you turn it to dust
You take what's gold and then you somehow make rust
Every lie, it made it harder to trust
But now it doesn't even matter

If you come back
It's like we never even had that
Every moment when you took my joy away
All the memories mean nothin' from today
Up to now I never hold back
True emotion make me feel sad
But I never wanna hear your name again
And go back to how it was before you came

Start movin' on, movin' on
I feel on a roll since you've been gone
Start movin' on, movin' on
Out of my life, life
Where you belong

Start movin' on, movin' on
I feel on a roll since you've been gone
Start movin' on, movin' on

Out of my life, life
Where you belong

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Ed Sheeran expresses his desire to move on from a past relationship. He declares that this is the last song he will write about the person he is addressing, suggesting that he has reached a point of exhaustion and wants to put an end to dwelling on the relationship.

He states that he used to think about this person constantly, their presence dominating his thoughts and conversations. The intensity of his emotions is evident in lines such as "All I'd sing when I would hit the high notes" and "All I thought about whenever I woke." However, he now realizes that their relationship no longer holds any significance and decides that it's best to forget it ever happened.

Throughout the song, Sheeran highlights the negative impact this person had on him. He describes how they took his joy away and made it harder for him to trust through lies and manipulation. Despite the sadness and pain caused by this relationship, he asserts that he never wants to hear their name again and is determined to go back to how his life was before they entered it.

The chorus emphasizes his determination to move on and leave this person behind. He acknowledges that since they have been gone, he feels like he is on a roll, implying a sense of liberation and relief. He wants to remove this person from his life completely, as indicated by the line "out of my life, life, where you belong."

In summary, these lyrics convey Ed Sheeran's decision to let go of a toxic relationship and move forward. He embraces the idea of starting anew, feeling empowered by the absence of this person, and emphasizing the importance of leaving behind the pain and heartache they caused him.

Hi

Eric

After 12 years of legendary albums about love, he's finally moving on. Ed will always be remembered a legend.

Kai Lucas Zachary

I don't think this is the end of him writing about all types of various different kinds of love.

Scallan

Definitley not the end of any type of era at all. An artist expresses the periods of their life through their music. This is an album about the current tribulations of his life, losing his best friend and the news of his wifes cancer. This is clearly a theraputic album for Ed, and his expression of his greif, fear of further loss, and becoming more vulnerable and exposed to the darker sides of life. Grief changed my life exponentially when I lost my father last year, and every single word of this album resonates with me. He writes for himself, we are just here to enjoy it, and it's so refreshing to hear someone release, what is metaphorically speaking, their personal diary.

PPOR PAPANUCH

Have you ever listen to all of his song? Or just Perfect and then comment ?

Eric

@PPOR PAPANUCH I listen to every single one of his songs lol

@Ericok, then tell us since when A-Team, Small bump, city, bloodstream, etc. become love songs?

MommaShawna

I suspect this will be one of those songs you will see on so many TV shows, it’s that good.
