Police In Helicopter
Eek-A-Mouse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yes boss, yes boss, yes boss, yes boss! Police in helicopter are searching for marijuana. Policemen in the streets are searching for cali-weed.
Soldiers in the field, burning the cali-weed.

[Chorus:]

But if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields. ...burning the cali-weed. Police in helicopter are searching for marijuana. Policemen in the streets are searching for cali-weed.
[Chorus:]

But if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields. Police in helicopter are searching for marijuana. Policemen in the streets are searching for cali-weed.
Policemen in the field, burning the cali-weed.

[Chorus:]

But if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields. We don't trouble your banana.
We don't trouble your porn.
We don't trouble your pre-mentor, we don't trouble you at all.

[Chorus:]

So if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields. If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields. Police in helicopter are searching for marijuana. Policemen in the streets are searching for cali-weed.
Policemen in the field, oh oh, burning the cali-weed.

[Chorus:]

But if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eek-A-Mouse's song "Police in helicopter" provide an insightful commentary on the war on drugs, specifically in the context of the Caribbean region where marijuana and other drugs are often grown and traded. The song starts by acknowledging the presence of police in helicopters searching for marijuana, and policemen in the streets searching for "cali-weed," a term used to describe high-quality marijuana grown in California. These actions by law enforcement are juxtaposed with the actions of soldiers burning the cannabis plants, suggesting a coordinated effort to eliminate the drug trade.

The chorus is a warning of sorts, with Eek-A-Mouse singing "but if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields." This suggests that if law enforcement continues to destroy cannabis crops, the farmers might retaliate by destroying the sugarcane crops that are a major source of income for the region. The bridge of the song then highlights the fact that the farmers and drug traffickers are not interested in harming law enforcement but are merely trying to make a living. The lyrics state that "we don't trouble your banana" or anything else that those in power might care about.

Overall, the song articulates the frustration and anger felt by those on the outskirts of society who are often targeted by law enforcement. This is particularly resonant in the Caribbean context where the drug trade is often a symptom of decades of poverty and a lack of opportunity.

When I was 12 on a miserable cruise with my parents to the Bahamas, waiting for them to finish gambling and drinking, eating alone at a shitty tourist restaurant, I heard this song. It sent me on a lifelong search of reggae/dancehall to finally find it. It wasn't until almost a decade later, in my friend's car, that I heard it on Sirius radio, and freaked the fuck out, to the point he almost crashed.

Anyway, I'm glad that this song in its own way introduced me to a wide variety of reggae and dancehall on my search for it... Lee "Scratch" Perry, Burning Spear, Inner Circle, Mutabarukah, Barrington Levy, Yellowman, Toots and the Maytals (my first concert ever, absolutely amazing, RIP mister Hibbert) etc. Never would have heard them if not for this song.
