However, Neubauten soon outgrew the confines of even the broad scope of industrial music. In their 25-plus years, they have produced a dozen studio albums, live records, a remix album and EP, scored theatre pieces, and more.
Lead vocalist Blixa Bargeld is perhaps the best-known member of the group, both for his work with Neubauten and as guitarist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. His fellow founding members Alexander Hacke and N.U. Unruh have likewise been active in various musical roles outside the group over the years.
Bassist Mark Chung was a member of the group from 1981 to 1994. He founded the publishing house Freibank Music Publishing to handle business affairs for Neubauten and other groups, and has continued in this role (concurrently serving as a senior vice-president of Sony Music International for nine years). Percussionist FM Einheit, was a member from 1981 to 1995, and has also been active as a solo artist and member of groups such as Gry.
Since 1997 the group has also included guitarist Jochen Arbeit and percussionist Rudi Moser.
Neubauten's most recent work has been available exclusively to subscribers to their online home, www.neubauten.org. Neubauten completed the third incarnation of their online project in November 2007 and were touring Europe in 2008 in support of their latest album Alles Wieder Offen.
Currently Einstürzende Neubauten is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a tour through Europe and the United States. In October/November 2010 the band is releasing Strategies Against Architecture IV, the fourth album in the archival compilation series by Neubauten which collates the band’s output from 2002-2010.

The lyrics of Einstürzende Neubauten's song "DNS-Wasserturm" depict a surreal and unsettling scene. The singer describes a garden and their activities throughout the day. However, their attention is suddenly drawn to termites in the trees, which leads to confusion and a sense of unease. The mention of houses containing termites contradicts the initial assumption, adding to the disorientation.
The lyrics then shift focus to the singer's hands, which are covered in small black beetles. The hands are described as sticky and resinous from the trees, with the singer attempting to flick off or remove the insects. Frustrated by their inability to do so, they resort to cutting at their finger with a knife, resulting in a jagged wound. The fear of infection arises, and the singer decides to wash their hands under running water.
In the bathroom, the washing process leads to a disturbing discovery. The water in the basin turns into a thick, brown sludge resembling vomit. Dead insects, dissolved resin, and the singer's blood contaminate the sink. Additionally, the drainage is obstructed, necessitating the manual removal of whatever has come out of the singer. This act is compared to clearing out a drain, with the substances held in the hands resembling spaghetti, with various colors and patterns, like electrical components.
The narrative takes an unexpected turn as the singer identifies these substances as their DNA molecules. They decide to dry them, laying them out on a table. The molecules take on the shape of small plastic ladders, which can be connected to one another. The singer offers them to someone named Mark, who becomes the first person to see these colored ladders. Mark's immediate question is how to listen to them, emphasizing the abstract nature of this DNA representation. The singer stresses that it cannot be listened to, as it is their DNA, specifically referring to it as deoxyribonucleic acid.
The lyrics conclude with a scene in a parking garage's attendant booth, where an eccentric person expresses their desire to purchase the DNA molecules. However, the group has not yet thought of a packaging solution for this unusual item.

Wir hatten einen Garten
We used to have a garden
And I had been doing something all day long
A woman who asks, how long have the termites been up there in the trees?
And someone else says beforehand, those are not termites
And I look up and there are houses where termites live
Angeblich, stimmt gar nicht
Supposedly, but it's not true
Plötzlich stelle ich fest, dass an meinen Händen, meinen Handgelenken, überall kleine schwarze Käfer kleben
Suddenly I realize that there are small black beetles sticking to my hands, my wrists, everywhere
And that my hands are sticky from the trees, brown, encrusted
Ich versuche die Käfer wegzuschnipsen, abzureißen
I try to flick the beetles off, tear them away
That doesn't work, because my hands are sticky everywhere
I take a knife and try to scrape them off
In doing so, I cut into the index finger of my left hand, middle joint
The wound was like a hacked-in flap of skin, loosely hanging there
I was afraid the wound could get infected
I wanted to go inside, wanted to wash it under running water
Inside, I had to scrape the beetles off properly under the running tap
After a while, the water in the basin becomes only a thick brown broth that looks like vomit
All the dead insects, the dissolved resin, the blood from my fingers
The sink keeps getting fuller because it drains worse and worse
And I pull out everything that's hanging in the drain
Alles was irgendwie aus mir herausgekommen ist
Everything that has somehow come out of me
Like how you retrieve things when you want to clear the drain
Indem man alles zwischen die Finger klemmt
By squeezing everything between your fingers
And what I hold in my hands is like spaghetti, leftover food, like resistors
So yellow and red and green, always at intervals, with stripes in other colors
Wie elektrische Teile, Spannungsregler, Dioden, usw
Like electrical components, voltage regulators, diodes, etc.
I think to myself, I know this, these are my DNA molecules
Ich habe mich entschieden sie zu trocknen
I have decided to dry them
Auf den Tisch gelegt zum Trocknen
Laid them on the table to dry
They took the shape of ladders, little plastic ladders
I laid them out and they could be connected to each other, blue yellow plastic ladders, my DNA
I ask if anyone wants them
And Mark is the first to see these colored ladders
The first thing he asks is, how do you listen to that?
I say, you can't listen to that, it's my DNA
Desoxyribonukleinsäure
Deoxyribonucleic acid
In der Pförtnerloge eines Parkhauses
In the concierge booth of a parking garage
A madman comes by who wants to buy them desperately
But we haven't thought of any packaging yet
Wie hört man sich das denn an?
How does one listen to that?
