Juan de los Santos Contreras, better known like El Carrao de Palmarito and … Read Full Bio ↴Juan de los Santos Contreras, better known like El Carrao de Palmarito and Clarín de la llanura, was a Venezuelan composer, singer and interpreter of joropo, son of Juan de Mata Laguna and Carmen Cecilia Contreras, was born in Palmarito, Apure state, April 7, 1928. Passed his childhood working in a farm near of hometown, started to sing from very young, reason why frequently was guest at the celebration and parties of Palmarito. In 1955 started to live at the city of Barinas. His first performance as singer, was in the radio station Radio Barinas, at the program Fiesta Criolla, where he acquires the pseudonym El Carrao de Palmarito, proposed by Luis Eduardo Camejo, a presenter of the station.
At this city obtained contract as singer in the Llano Alto hotel, acting during nine months, after this he travels to Caracas, appearing at the stations Radio Rumbos and Radiodifusora Venezuela, the presenter Alfredo Acuña Zapata add the nickname Clarín de la Llanura to Contreras. One successfully at the media, make tours around Venezuela, for the projection of his career. Represented Venezuela in several international events, participating at the film Más Allá Del Orinoco (Beyond the Orinoco), next to the Mexican artist Javier Solís. Also at the Venezuelan production, Agua y Sangre, next to the actor Carlos Olivier.
In 1976 the governments of the states Apure and Portuguesa, made a tribute to him, revealing a bust of the artist at the town of Palmarito. Also in that year, records with José Romero Bello, and the group of Joseíto Romero, La Leyenda de Florentino y El Diablo (The legend of Florentino and the Devil) based on the poem of Alberto Arvelo Torrealba, with this interpretation Juan de los Santos Contreras consacrates like artist.
El Carrao de Palmarito, participated at many Joropo Festivals, some of them, The first International Match of Joropo, celebrated in Arauca, Colombia, obtaing two gold medals and 15000 pesos, Second Festival of Joropo, San Fernando de Apure, winner of the Cantaclaro de Oro First Contest, also obtain three first places at the Festivals of Villavicencio, Colombia, second place at the Maracaya de Oro, in Maracay, and a Honorary degree at the Florentino de Oro, for his musical career.
In 1998, directed by John Petrizzelli and Mercedes Ramírez, was presentated a documentary film about his life, with the title of Carrao, exploring the daily life, the beliefs, customs and memories as well as the artistic trajectory and biography of the singer. This film was awarded by the Cinemateca Nacional de Venezuela.
Contreras was condecorated in many occasions, for his contribution to the Venezuelan folk music, received recognitions from institutions like, Kids Foundation of Venezuela, Central University of Venezuela, Chacao Municipality, Aragua state Government, a tribute by the embassy of Venezuela in Jamaica, and the National Prize of Music in 1998.
Between his best known songs, they emphasize, Florentino y el Diablo, Aquella mujer que amé, Furia, Chaparralito llanero, Cajón del Arauca apureño, Llanura yo soy tu hijo, Plegaria llanera, Travesía de San Camilo, Faenas del llano, Dulce María, Mis retoños, El morrocoy de doña Carmen, Caminito de Arichuna, Recorriendo a Barinas, Los martirios del Carrao, El sueño de Julio Verne, Villavicencio, among others.
On December 10, 2002, at the age of 74, this legend of the Venezuelan folklore dies in Barinas.

Falso! Nace el 26 de Enero de 1940 a orillas del raudal La Erica en el Hato Jurapal (que significa cacho de toro). Sus padres pijas araucanos José Martínez y Ramona Arteaga.
En sus palabras:
" Tenía cinco años y debuté en un típico parrando llanero en el fundo araucano Jurapal..."
A los 16 años gana El Primer Encuentro Nacional de Folclor, celebrado en Manizales, Caldas - Colombia. En 1969 graba su primer larga duración con Tirso Delgado otro artista llanero colombiano con el éxito que lo bautizó para siempre "El Cazador Novato" basado en la real historia de otro coterráneo araucano de Cravo Norte llamado Juan Santos que tuvo mucha plata y quedó en la ruina y trabajaba como veguero para sobrevivir.
Fue Detective del DAS (Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad) además de ganadero. Una de sus canciones más populares "El Bongo de mis recuerdos" la compuso en tan sólo diez minutos en un hotel para un concurso en Villavicencio en 1982, eso da cuenta de su versatilidad.
Otra anécdota narrada por él mismo:
" En 1966 cuando los venezolanos organizaron el Torneo Internacional del Joropo, un concurso binacional trayendo a sus mejores artistas como Loyola, El Carrao de Palmarito y Nelson Morales seguros de que ganarían, los venezolanos apostaron que el ganador tendría derecho a erigir por Decreto a la música llanera como emblema nacional, había que componer, cantar y contrapuntear. Gané con la canción "Llanura yo soy tu hijo", mi triunfo evitó que los venezolanos nos arrebataran una de las tradiciones más representativas de la región: la música llanera, quedando claro que la música llanera no era solo de Venezuela sino también de Colombia. El Decreto nunca se firmó."
No entiendo porqué a los venezolanos les molesta tanto que un colombiano llanero componga temas del llano y un icónico venezolano interprete ese tema por ser llanero de verdad y los que acá escriben al ver que el tema es casi un himno caen en negación extrema al asignar su nacionalidad a quien compuso la canción, un colombiano.
Quieren que les cuente más de lo que hizo este señor llanero araucano colombiano allá en Venezuela?

El joropo es venezolano. Decir que es español es una pataleta demasiado infantil y demasiado mezquina para negarle al joropo su origen venezolano. Uds lo saben muy bien, por eso es que yo me río cuando escucho hablar que el llano es uno solo, que la hermandad, etc, etc.
Es venezolano y uds lo saben.
Los propios instrumentos niegan el origen colombiano del joropo.
Colombia no conoció el arpa llanera hasta principio de la decada de los 60 y el cuatro es venezolano hasta los tuetanos. No tienen joropos ante de los años 50, el unico joropo autentico que podrían tener es el que les vino de los araucanos, población que nunca estuvo bajo la juridiscción de colombia hasta tiempos recientes y que fue poblado por venezolanos.
Sea como sea al arauca le llego el joropo desde venezuela porque fue el lugar donde se originó.
Las fronteras "arbitrarias" impuestas de las cuales hablan uds los colombianos no fue venezuela quien las impuso porque antes eso era territorio venezolano.
A la población que dividieron con esas fronteras no fue población colombiana, fue población venezolana. Históricamente el arauca ha sido una región rebelde a las elites bogotanas y no es sino ver donde se asientan esas poblaciones para saber que eran venezolanas. Tanto Arauca como puerto carrecño.
