A Ghost Of A Chance With You
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need your love so badly, I love you, oh, so madly
But I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you!
I thought at last I'd found you, but other lovers surround you
And "I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you!"
If you'd surrender just for a tender kiss or two
You might discover, that I'm the lover meant for you
And I'd be true, but what's the good of scheming
I know I must be dreaming

joe pass backing you up, it doesnt get better than that.

Why did Ella's voice change so much? It's very odd how wide her vibrato got. And she really lost that clear high register. It sounds like a completely different vocalist. Some singers sound essentially the same at whatever age, Leonard Cohen or Paul McCartney for example. I'm wondering if she did something to damage her instrument. I saw her in the 1980s when I was a teenager and she sounded about like this. I mean, still a legend but the voice a bit wobbly and tired sounding.

people use to tell me that a singers voice usually suffers as they age. i guess you have run the scales on a daily basis to keep what you got. like a weightlifter that has to stay in top shape, you have to lift constantly, just to keep what you got.

I'll bet it comes from her long history of emulating instrumentalists, like her scat singing. That sounds like trumpet vibrato to me.

Maybe, but his feeling, pitch and crativity are always untouched

she got older?

Added character, a little like Billie Holiday. Seems like the perfect voice for this tune. Reminds me of Joe Williams too.
