I Concentrate On You
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whenever skies look grey to me
And trouble begins to brew
Whenever the winter winds
Become too strong
I concentrate on you

When fortune cries nay, nay to me
And people declare "you're through"
Whenever the blues become my only song
I concentrate on you

On your smile, so sweet, so tender
When at first, your kiss I decline
On the love in your eyes when I surrender
And once again, our arms intertwine

And so, when wise men say to me
That love's young dreams never come true

To prove that even wise men can be wrong
I concentrate on you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's song "I Concentrate On You" are about the power of love to bring happiness and hope during difficult times. The opening lines suggest a sense of weariness and despair, with "grey skies" and "trouble brewing". The singer then declares that in such moments, she focuses her attention on the person she loves. When things feel bleak and the world is closing in, she turns her thoughts to her lover, using their smiling face and tender touches to find comfort and strength.

This idea is repeated in the second verse, where the singer talks about people declaring that she's "through" and the blues becoming her only song. Once again, she turns towards her lover as a source of resilience and joy. The final verse is a response to the idea that love's dreams never come true. The singer wants to prove that sometimes, even the wisest people can be wrong. By concentrating on the one she loves, she has found a way to push through adversity and overcome doubt.

Overall, the song is a powerful tribute to the ways in which love can sustain and uplift us, even during the toughest of times. Through its lyrics, we can see how the simple act of focusing on someone we care about can help us find hope and happiness.

Porters best ballad--- moving, heartfelt. Beautiful bridge. And nobody sings it better than Ella.

Years ago I read an interview in (I think) "Downbeat" magazine in which Joni Mitchell said there were two great schools of singing a female vocalists could follow: 1) Ella, as nature's perfect instrument for pure by-the-note renditions and 2) Billie Holliday, for amazing interpretations and stylizing. (Not Joni's exact word of course, but my recollection of her gist. After all, Ella was the queen of scat.)

@arnross Thank you for your comment :) I've made some corrections to the lyrics. Ella doesn't sing the original lyrics in that take so I'm really sorry for my mistake and thank you again ;)

As a COLE PORTER fanatic, the shorter fan is too tame for me, he "Porter" rewrote lyrics, fairly often. Just think, songs by Cole Porter were written 80 years ago still hold up.
